Australia: Newcastle Woman Thinks AU$1M Lotto Win Is AU$1K

An incredibly lucky woman from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, thought she won only AU$1,000 ($662) from a recent Saturday Lotto draw. To the surprise of the winner, whose name was not disclosed, she actually won a sum significantly greater than AU$1,000 ($662), namely, a staggering AU$1 million ($661,700).

The winner was one out of five division one entries from Saturday Lotto’s draw 4487 that was held over the weekend on Saturday. Besides the winner from New South Wales, a prize was secured in Queensland while three customers from Victoria also won a division one prize from the recent Saturday Lotto draw.

Each of the lucky division one winners secured AU$1,012,896 ($670,300). The winning numbers from draw 4487 were 17, 23, 25, 29, 30 and 31. Supplementary numbers from the drawing were 6 and 14. The woman purchased her ticket via The Lott’s official application.

When asked what she plans to do with the win, the Newcastle woman said that the first thing on her list is paying off her house. The lucky winner admitted she plans to save a part of the winnings and also follow the advice of a financial advisor.

“My first priority is to pay off the house and go from there – whatever the financial advisor tells me to do. I want a nest egg for the future,“

Asked about the time she checked her ticket, the lucky winner revealed that she initially thought that she won only AU$1,000 ($662). “I didn’t look at all the commas,” she said to Lottery officials.

The win undoubtedly came as a surprise, considering that the Newcastle woman didn’t usually play Saturday Lotto. She only started to play the lottery game a few weeks back and she had a hard time believing she actually won a division one prize.

The winner explained: “I’m just in shock. I can’t believe it. It’s always been a dream to win. This will completely change my life – put it that way.” She said that after realizing that she had won one million dollars, she had a sleepless night.
