Serbia’s Best Chance for Olympic Gold

Serbia is famous for being the land of basketball, but its national basketball team (5×5) probably won’t do much this summer. Sure, they have Nikola Jokic on the roster, but it’s just that Team US looks unstoppable.

However, Serbia’s chance of winning Gold in the 3×3 basketball event looks much better. There are several reasons for that, starting with the fact that Serbia’s players have been fantastic lately. They won the previous two editions of the FIBA 3×3 World Cup, as well as the last five FIBA 3×3 Europe Cups.

On top of everything, these guys won the bronze medal in the previous Olympics. Two of the four players from that roster – Dejan Majstrovic and Mihajlo Vasic – are still on the team. They’re three years older and way more experienced. Plus, their teammates – Strahinja Stojacic and Marko Brankovic – seem to be in top form right now.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these guys are extremely motivated to win Gold, not just for national pride but also for financial gain. The country where the median monthly net salary is roughly $680 is awarding Olympic gold medalists with a one-time bonus of $217,000, as well as a national pension of roughly $2,400 per month.

In comparison, American athletes will get $37,500 for winning gold medals at the 2024 Olympics.

Can USA 3×3 Ruin Serbia’s Plans?

Team US is the second favorite to win Gold with the 3×3 Basketball odds of +180 at BetOnline. This is going to be the first time the United States men’s national 3×3 team is competing at the Olympics as they failed to qualify for the ones in Tokyo.

Their representatives in the 3×3 basketball tournament of the 2024 Olympics are guys in their 30s with plenty of experience. Jimmer Fredette, for example, played in the NBA for over five years. Then, there’s Canyon Barry who’s the son of Basketball Hall of Famer, Rick Barry.

The other two members of Team US 3×3 Basketball team are Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis who used to have great careers in college basketball.

With such players on the team, it’s no surprise Team US looks ready to give Serbia war for the gold medal. Another national team that could potentially challenge for Gold is Latvia, which won this medal the last time around.

Two players from Latvia’s golden generation – Karlis Lasmanis and Nauris Miezis – will play in Paris, but the problem is that they haven’t been great since then. In fact, their greatest success since winning the Olympic Gold was finishing third at the 2023 World Cup in Vienna.

2024 Olympics: 3×3 Basketball Prediction

Our prediction for the 3×3 Basketball event is that Serbia will win Gold. These guys are the reigning champions of the world, as well as champions of Europe. The only thing they’re missing in their portfolio is Gold at the Olympics. We think they’ll get ahold of it on August 5.

Pick: Serbia 3×3
