Sports betting in Michigan is legal and fully running. Online sports betting, the Wolverine State’s last gambling frontier is also legal, and more importantly, available. The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has issued 15 preliminary licenses in December 2020, paving the way forward for mobile betting.

In fact, betting firms have already launched their online sportsbooks in the state. In January 2021, DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and FOX Bet, among others, entered the online sports betting landscape, with determination and commitment to the local market.

This page is dedicated to finding out more about legal and mobile sports betting in Michigan, everything you need to know about the state’s sports, available wagering apps, how to download the apps, and which betting sites are your best choices.

We will touch on this and more, including sports partnerships, in-play, and live wagering, and tribal as well as commercial casinos.

Best Online Sportsbooks for Betting in Michigan

Michigan legalized its sports betting industry in March 2020, and things have been moving quickly ever since. Online sports betting arrived early in January 2021, allowing a number of betting firms to offer sports betting wagers remotely.

The reason behind this was simple, with the Wolverine State and Michigan Gaming Control Board seeking to cash in on Super Bowl and March Madness betting. It has paid off, as online sportsbooks are now chugging along happily.

All sportsbooks are partnering with Detroit’s three commercial casinos, to name Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino Hotel. There are 23 tribal operators that are also teaming up with operators to bring an A-level online sports betting experience.

Overall, the Michigan sports ecosystem is thriving, and this is largely owing to the arrival of online betting. With numerous bonuses to choose from, there is certainly no shortage of great options for sports fans to enjoy.

Today, there are dozens of worthwhile sportsbooks in the state with each and every one bringing you a quality sports betting experience that rivals the country’s biggest wagering hubs. Michigan’s online betting landscape has overcome legal obstacles to become one of the nation’s leading places to make a wager.

If you are keen to participate in Michigan online sports betting, picking from one of the recommended online sportsbooks in our brand table is a good way to start. We have also listed comprehensive reviews for each, allowing you to explore individual brands a little better.

Latest Gambling News in Michigan

Michigan is home to 9.97 million people or the 10th largest state in terms of population. Naturally, sports betting is big with the locals, and that is not the least because Michigan hosts four big-league teams and two Big 10 college sports programs.

Detroit is the home of popular Michigan sports franchises as the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Pistons. Understandably, interest in wagering in Michigan has long been pent-up among residents. When Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed sports betting into law and allowed the industry to officially launch in March 2020, much of this demand has found an outlet.

Even better, the arrival of online sportsbooks has made it possible to tap into new sports betting resources, and stem some of the capital outflows to offshore markets.

With the Wolverine State welcoming established leaders in the sports betting business, including BetMGM, DraftKings, PointsBet, William Hill, Golden Nugget, Barstool, and others, the locals had immediate access to the country’s premier betting venues.

Visiting tribal or commercial casinos is still very popular, albeit the emphasis is clearly on mobile sports betting. In fact, owing to the sheer population of the state, many expect to see Michigan outperform the nation’s leaders in terms of sports betting handle, New Jersey.

Michigan Online Sportsbooks and Brands

Michigan’s online sports betting ecosystem is thriving, and no small part of this is owing to the interest mainstream betting companies showed in the state.

From the arrival of the finest retail sportsbook options to online sports betting, Wolverine State has tons of great facilities and mobile betting sites. We have put together a list of all available mobile sports betting options. Stick around for frequent updates, too.

Apart from these sportsbooks, there are several others as of right now that there are several other establishments and companies that haven’t quite picked up online sports betting brands. They include:

  • FireKeepers Casino (owned by Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Indians)
  • Four Winds Casino (owned by Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians)
  • Soaring Eagle Casino (owned by Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe)

Each brand is established with the help of a retail sportsbook, which is part of the way Michigan regulates its online sports betting industry. Now, the state is expecting to see over 80% of all wagering take place online, which is understandable.

Mobile devices are a powerful and convenient way of placing a bet, and Michigan sports betting apps are already some of the finest. Leading brands such as FanDuel and DraftKings have had years to streamline their mobile offers, and new arrivals such as FOX Bet and BetMGM have the know-how to adapt.

By sheer size, BetMGM expects to be the third or even second-largest operator in the United States, and Michigan should be no exception.

How to Get Started with Michigan Sports Betting?

When Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed sports betting into law, she made it possible for everyone who meets the legal age of 21 to participate in sports betting activities in the Wolverine State. Things have picked up rather quickly too, because, in December 2020, the Michigan Gaming Control Board approved 15 licenses to sportsbooks in the state, giving the green light to pivotal brands, including DraftKings Sportsbook, William Hill Sportsbook, and FanDuel Sportsbook, among others to go ahead.

Sports bettors in the state can simply register and play remotely by using sports betting apps, which are state-of-the-art solutions. These apps are listed on the official Google Play and Apple Store, making for easy and quick downloads.

Sometimes, you may need to download the Android version from the website, and allow your device to “recognize unknown sources,” which is a legitimate way to enable the app. So long as you are 21, signing up for an account will be easy and straightforward enough, and it takes only a few minutes to complete.

Once you are registered, you will be able to participate in sports betting anywhere in the state as long as you have good internet connectivity. Even then, anything outside of in-play wagers should require fairly low broadband allowing you to look in on various odds, results, and more, depending on what the sportsbook offers to mobile bettors.

You will need to comply with KYC and AML verification processes, which expect you to submit the last few digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). That is an important part of the Michigan sports betting way of work.

You will have access to numerous betting markets and be able to deposit and cash out using a variety of payment methods, including PayPal, ACH, PayNearMe, Play+, and others.

Online Sports Betting Bonuses in Michigan

Bonusing is a huge part of the Michigan sports betting ecosystem. With online wagering up and running, resident bettors in the state definitely have a bunch of ways to secure additional funds, get odds boosters, risk-free wagers, free bets, and more, on regular, playoff and grand finals sporting events. Presently, Michigan online sports betting bonuses and promotions include:

  • Welcome bonus
  • Risk-free wagers
  • Free bet options
  • Odds boosters
  • Cashback
  • Refer a friend

Michigan offers a host of viable free bet opportunities along with a welcome bonus for every sportsbook available. The majority of online sportsbooks are offering $100 and $200 in free bonus funds you may use to bet with.

The actual free bet amounts will vary, and they will be unique to each online sportsbook. Sometimes a free bet may be worth $50 or $100. All bets are tied to wagering requirements, though, so you will do well to pay attention to these.

Nevertheless, playthrough requirements are usually very easy to sort out. Online sportsbooks are still bound to the standards set out by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, making for fair and worthwhile sports betting opportunities.

A physical sportsbook in Michigan may still extend some sort of bonus, but this is mostly in the form of synergies. For example, betting on sports via BetMGM allows you to develop your M life Rewards account, which is a neat additive pro to your experience.

You will notice that most online sports betting welcome bonuses will always let you have some credits extra to try on the casinos. It’s just the way the nature of these bonuses works.

A VIP Bonus in Michigan Is Worth a Lot

Michigan is shaping up as one of the best states to be a sports bettor, and no small part of that is thanks to BetMGM, the ambitious joint-venture between MGM Resorts and Entain. The more you play, the more perks you will become privy to, and not just in the brand’s sportsbooks, but also on their online gaming platforms, too.

Accumulating points will mean you can redeem those for various benefits, including merchandise, free bets, or more bonuses. Because many Michigan teams now partner up with an online sportsbook, to name the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Red Tigers, and Detroit Red Lions, finding signed sports paraphernalia as part of a sportsbook’s loyalty program is actually easy.

VIP and loyalty programs are definitely worth your while, and the best bit is you definitely don’t have to go the extra mile to accumulate them. In fact, they have accumulated automatically, and you are rolled as part of the sportsbook’s loyalty and VIP offer right away.

You can use your sportsbook app to exchange and redeem points, place a bet, and check in on live scores, all contributing to your status with the online sportsbook you have picked.

M life Rewards: Great for Your Betting Experience

A fantastic example of what a great VIP program looks like is the M life Rewards, which will allow you to have a whale of a time, not just in your home state of Michigan, but also in any other state. We are talking about retail sportsbooks, tribal and commercial casinos, as well as online sportsbooks, naturally.

When we spoke with Shay Segev, Entain’s chief executive officer, he told us that his company, which is running BetMGM as part of a joint venture with MGM Resorts, expects the brand to penetrate every legalized state almost as soon as legal sports betting is available.

Shay also told us about M life Rewards and how it allows for great synergies between your online sports betting experience, in Michigan and beyond:

“Secondly, we have access to the BetMGM Life Program, which is great for people who visit the actual MGM Resorts properties, and they can appreciate the added benefit of the program.”

Shay Segev, CEO of Entain

The VIP program is definitely a fantastic way to find more synergies between your retail and online betting experience. Even if you are not visiting an MGM Resorts property to bet on sports, you still have the opportunity to knock off 20% off your accommodation booking, get access to free rooms, enjoy personalized offers, and play for free by earning points.

With the MGM Grand Detroit property in Michigan, you are always a stone’s throw away from fantastic sports betting and casino experiences.

What Sports Can You Bet on in Michigan?

Betting in Michigan is clearly a significant part of the way fans approach sports in the first place. Yet, you are probably wondering if the opening up of the wagering market made it so that you can bet on all big sporting events. As it turns out, there are very few sports markets that Michiganians aren’t able to freely access their online sportsbooks, and this is a good thing.

There are over 20 viable sports betting markets in the state, all approved by the Michigan Gaming Control Board and making for a diverse ecosystem where you can bet and enjoy tons of local and international opportunities.

Naturally, a lot of the available sports are focused on North America, including the United States, and Canada. There are numerous sports to bet on, including:

  • Motorsports
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Martial arts
  • Rugby
  • Cycling
  • Boxing,
  • Football
  • Tennis
  • Soccer

Each of these categories comes with the major type of sports betting markets and competitions you expect to see, including MLB, MLS, NFL, NHL, NBA, and more. Motorsports fans will be able to bet on NASCAR and Formula 1 as well as IndyCar.

Better yet, if you cherish martial arts, Michigan is one of the best places to find a viable market for UFC, Bellator, the Professional Fighters League, or even boxing for that matter. Detroit’s commercial casinos have been accepting fair business since March 2020, and Michigan is definitely a promised land for sports betting market variety, and more.

Michigan sports betting is chock-full with excellent markets. The mobile sports betting market is a convenience that definitely contributes to that. Yet, it’s the state’s approach to an open betting ecosystem that truly allows it to stand out. You have access to all sorts of sports bets imaginable, including but hardly limited to moneyline, spread, and totals. The full list features some neat additions.

These include teasers (a sort of bet that allows you to bet on two different games and adjust the point spreads for both) and parlays (another multiple-selection bet that allows betting on multiple games and winning, you need to get all outcomes right).

Some sports-specific bets also exist, which will add a bit of spicing for those players who are truly familiar with innings and puck lines in baseball and hockey respectively. Better yet, you have a host of proposition bets to enjoy. In these types of bets, you will be betting on individual players and outcomes.

The “proposals” can get quite specific, too, and pertain to whether an NFL player manages to throw a touchdown or an NBA team achieves a specific Margin of Victory.

These are known as “player props” and “game props,” and their nature is quite riveting, as they allow you to approach sports betting in completely new ways, add challenge and excitement, but also grant you the potential for a big payday.

Professional Michigan Teams and Sports Betting Partnerships

The sheer level of interest Michigan sports betting is attracting has resonated with some of the professional franchises in the state, and placing a wager on sports is no longer a taboo. In fact, if anything, sports franchises are exploring the betting climate and finding new ways to engage with fan bases through it.

Multiple studies have already shown that watching sports leads to higher sports betting and vice versa, making it an ideal time for the state’s sports franchises to enter numerous partnerships.

Now, Michigan’s sports teams have been just a little shy, but not enough to pass up on excellent opportunities. Here are several partnerships that wrapped up in Michigan just in 2020, with more coming down the pipeline.

Points Bet and Detroit Tigers

The partnership between the Detroit Tigers and PointsBet was signed in July 2020, looking for better opportunities to use the intellectual property and bolster awareness for each entity’s operations.

PointsBet will seek to enhance fan engagement and tap into its unique experiences, promotions and tailored content, with branded offerings appearing at the Comerica Park, the Tigers home stadium.

BetMGM and Detroit Lions, Red Wings

BetMGM’s footprint in the United States has grown rapidly over the past two years. The organization started “late,” but it caught up quickly, becoming one of the most significant names in the betting industry, and quite naturally, sports betting in Michigan.

Both the Detroit Lions and Red Wings have found in BetMGM a worthwhile partner, and have collaborated closely with the betting company to engage in in-stadium, TV, and digital awareness campaigns, as well as bolster their social media presence.

The company is the first official sports betting partnership for both the Lions and Red Wings.

Detroit Pistons and FanDuel, DraftKings

Another noteworthy tie-up is the partnership between daily fantasy sports giants FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook with the Detroit Pistons, the state’s NBA franchise.

FanDuel may have stolen the title of “first official sports betting partner,” but DraftKings really took only hours to follow up. Both deals pretty much amount to “in-arena signage, digital and TV advertising and presence to drive fans of the professional basketball outfit to its sports betting offerings.”

Detroit’s Commercial Casinos in Michigan

Michigan sports betting first began with retail betting at the state’s commercial and tribal casinos. The three Detroit properties, also known as the state’s only commercial casinos, have been one of the biggest drivers of sports betting in Michigan.

MGM Grand Detroit hosts a BetMGM Sportsbook, Greektown Casino has a Barstool Sportsbook, and MotorCity Casino houses a FanDuel Sportsbook. All three casinos allow you to bet on Michigan sports in person, but you also have the added benefit of excellent sports betting apps.

The Greektown Casino is operated by Penn National Gaming. Outside of Detroit, though, there are plenty of places to visit and make an in-person bet as well. If you are a stickler for online sports betting, though, that is quite alright, and you do so remotely from anywhere in the state.

Tribal Casinos and Sports Betting in Michigan State

Tribal casinos are other proponents of online sports betting in Michigan, and in this, the state is one of the most successful jurisdictions in the country. In places like Florida and California, tribes have been giving regulators and the general public a bit of a pushback in regards to granting commercial casinos and private operators the right to run online sports betting.

Michigan sports betting has been a bit of a trend-setter, following in the steps of other forward-thinking states such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

On the other hand, Iowa eliminated the need to register in person, making for a more liberal market. Tribal casinos in Michigan, though, have not been a spanner in the works of progress. In fact, tribal casinos have helped a lot.

They have set up both retail and online sportsbooks, and have generally been a conduit of top-notch betting options. In fact, they may have already opened their retail sportsbook options.

You can make a bet in person and in some cases – online – at nearly all of the 23 tribal casinos in the state. Here is the list of every tribe or tribal casino that has shown interest in joining the sizable and growing sports betting market in Michigan State:

Bay Mills Indian Community

  • Location: Bay Mills Casino and Kings Club Casino, Brimley

The Bay Mills Indian Community has been one of the first tribal casinos to rally behind sports betting in the state. Presently, Bay Mills is preparing to launch an online sportsbook with DraftKings, and the tribe is preparing to launch a retail operation at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley.

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians

  • Location: Odawa Casino Resorts in Petoskey, Mackinaw City

The partnership between The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and The Stars Group has been shaping up nicely. The tribe is teamed up with The Stars Group (TSG) and the group’s betting brand, FOX Bet, which it has access to as part of a mega-deal with Flutter Entertainment. Since the deal was struck, FOX Bet has opened two retail sportsbooks in Odawa Casino in Petoskey and Mackinaw City.

Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Potawatomi Indians

  • Location: Gun Lake Casino in Wayland

The Gun Lake Casino by the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Potawatomi Indians is another essential property in the state, and an early supporter of sports betting. Gun Lake Casino has been a positive force in the community and running Dacey’s Sportsbook, a retail sports betting venue.

Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi

  • Location: FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek

Owners of FireKeepers Casino, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi have teamed up with Scientific Games to bring A-level retail and online sports betting experience.

FireKeepers will go ahead with its own proprietary sportsbook and has turned down numerous efforts from the likes of BetAmerica, FanDuel, DraftKings, and William Hill, to name a few.

Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians

  • Location: Four Winds Casinos in Dowagiac, Hartford and New Buffalo

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians launched three sportsbooks in retail venues across Southwest Michigan in Dowagiac, Hartford, and New Buffalo. The company teamed up with Kambi Group plc to provide it with the sports betting software.

Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe

  • Location: Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, Mount Pleasant, and Saganing Eagles Landing & Hotel, Standish

Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has been a bit slow with opening its sportsbooks. It’s one of the few that has announced no formal partnerships but is expected to launch retail sportsbooks in Q1 2021.

Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians

  • Location: Kewadin Casinos in Christmas, Hessel, Manistique, Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace

Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians has forged a successful alliance with WynnBet and GAN, opening five retail locations in December 2020, and later launching its online sports betting product in January.

In-Play and Live Bets

While not everyone in Michigan State is familiar with how in-play sports betting works specifically, the vertical is one of the fastest-growing in the state. Put this way, you bet on an event after it has started and with so many excellent franchises, including the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers, there is certainly no shortage of good choices.

Live betting is considered a more advanced of sports betting, and one that requires a little more experienced mindset and trial-and-effort with betting on sports. To achieve this, though, you need to first approach sports betting on regular markets.

It’s true, however, that in-play markets are the future, as they boost engagement and lead to better overall results for sportsbooks and oftentimes for bettors. The most popular in-play sports betting markets include totals, point spreads, and money lines with the “cash-out” option available to help you retreat some of your bets if you run into trouble.

Michigan Sports Betting App and Mobile Betting

Mobile sports betting in Michigan arrived just in time with the Michigan Gaming Control Board and lawmakers okaying remote betting options in 2020 and following up with 15 licenses in January 2021 It’s not at all surprising that the state has done so, as the legalization of the Lawful Sports Betting Act was focused on bringing out the biggest dividends for the state.

Mobile is the leading technology in all mature and developing sports betting states, and that includes Michigan State, with the national average for mobile sports betting around 80-90% depending on the state. Overall, there is a clear preference for mobile betting, and even people who attend sportsbooks in person prefer to bet via sports betting apps for convenience’s sake.

So what sports betting apps can you use in Michigan? The answer is quite a few. Sports fans will have access to BetMGM, BetRivers, DraftKings, FanDuel, FoxBet, PointsBet, Barstool, and William Hill apps, to name a few.

Apps today are available on both Google Play, Apple Store, or through a direct download. Downloads are usually for mobile apps. Anyway, installing an app is very easy, and you will have access to the entire selection of website features, including cash out, risk-free bet options, and in-play sports betting markets.

Legalizing Michigan Sports Betting – A Brief History

Making sports betting legal in Michigan wasn’t too arduous a task. In fact, lawmakers responded positively to the news that New Jersey had legalized sports betting, and had made it possible for any other state in the country to set out on the same path. The Michigan Legislature almost passed a package of deals in December 2018, but outgoing Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed the bill, setting back progress by an entire year.

In December 2019, though, there was no hesitation, and the proposed law cleared both the House and Senate, with Michigan lawmakers turning to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signing the law and giving a start to the establishment of proper sports betting in the Wolverine State.

On March 11, 2020, Greektown Casino launched along with MGM Grand, which added a BetMGM retail sportsbook, followed a day later by a FanDuel Sportsbook at the Motor City casino. All three commercial casinos became the first to welcome sports betting in Michigan.

The next months clearly weren’t too easy, with a legal sports betting climate, but most sports were largely suspended due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, this allowed tribal casinos to start catching up on Michigan sports betting and bring their own products online.

On June 22, 2020, FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek teamed up with Scientific Games to launch a retail sports betting product. Timing suffered a little and was pushed back to August 2020 when The Dacey’s Sportsbook opened doors.

More good news arrived in July with Four Winds Casino opening sportsbooks in New Buffalo, Dowagiac, and Hartford. The same month, Little River Casino launched a sportsbook of its own. September came with two more launches. One was BetAmerica Sportsbook by Island Resort & Casino in Harris and the other, William Hill Sportsbook by Turtle Creek in Williamsburg, Traverse City.

In December, Five Kewadin Casino launched betting kiosks, having teamed up with WynnBet, and powered by GAN, which is a technological provider of online and retail sports betting solutions.
