Golden Nugget Atlantic City Faces Leadership Transition

After more than a decade and a half in the role, the current CEO leaves behind a property that has found its footing in a changing market

Golden Nugget Atlantic City recently announced a shift in leadership, marking the end of one of the longest tenures in the city’s modern casino era. According to a recent report by Press of Atlantic City, Tom Pohlman will end his 15-year tenure on May 1, when he transfers all operational duties to Kevin Scull, his longtime deputy.

Golden Nugget Fostered a Unique Identity

Pohlman’s departure closes a chapter that began in 2011 when Tilman Fertitta’s company, Landry’s Inc., acquired the former Trump Marina and set out to reshape it. Pohlman was assigned to manage the transition and quickly proved his expertise. Over time, he became a steady presence in a market often defined by uncertainty.

During his tenure, Pohlman focused on smaller, practical decisions that benefited the business and its customers. The strategy helped Golden Nugget create a unique identity. When the casino briefly introduced paid parking in 2024, leading to public backlash, Pohlman responded by reversing the policy, removing the fees, and distinguishing the business from its competitors.

It has been the honor of a lifetime to lead the amazing team at the Golden Nugget for the last 15 years, and provide so many memorable experiences for our valuable guests.

Tom Pohlman

Pohlman’s customer-focused approach extended to promotions and amenities. He was a key figure in maintaining popular initiatives like a seafood buffet and flexible dining options. During renovation periods, he allowed guests to watch the transformation in real time, even providing them with novelty hard hats. Such small touches kept visitors engaged despite the disruption.

The Venue Faces Rising Challenges

In the last 15 years, Golden Nugget has focused on familiarity and service, inspiring loyalty among returning customers. On the financial side, the property has performed well, reporting significant revenue growth in 2025. While the post-pandemic rebound has not been consistent across Atlantic City, Golden Nugget has largely found lasting success.

After more than a decade and a half in the role, Pohlman leaves a legacy of success. Scull must also deal with changing customer expectations and rising competition. He has worked alongside Pohlman throughout his tenure and must now ensure the property’s success. His appointment indicates that the venue will maintain its current trajectory as it tackles an increasingly complicated market.

Debates over expanding casino gaming in northern New Jersey are especially concerning for Atlantic City operators who fear increased competition. However, the core features that enabled Golden Nugget’s success are unlikely to disappear. The challenge ahead will be to keep the venue’s impressive momentum while focusing on innovation with stability.
