The Sexual Misconduct Allegations against David Copperfield Increase

A new report by The Guardian expanded the list of people accusing magician David Seth Kotkin, better known as David Copperfield, of sexual misconduct. This is hardly the first time the Emmy-awarded Las Vegas celebrity has been accused of mistreating women sexually.

The Guardian understood that many of these women felt comfortable talking about these matters thanks to the #MeToo movement. Many of them said they met Copperfield through his work as an entertainer. More than half of the allegations are from women who say they were minors at the time of the alleged incidents.

Some of these women claimed that they were drugged before Copperfield had sexual relations with them. This included Brittney Lewis who in 2018 said that Copperfield had sexually assaulted her in 1988 when she was a 17-year-old model. A similar claim was raised by a woman referred to as “Gillian” who told the Guardian that she and her friend were likewise assaulted.

Not all accusations come from people Copperfield has allegedly slept with. Four other women said that Copperfield had cropped them during live performances on stage. Relatives of one of these women even claimed that they had witnessed Copperfield groping her breasts.

Fallon Thornton, one of the women who were reportedly groped by Copperfield, told the Guardian that her case was never taken seriously. According to the Las Vegas police, footage from MGM where Copperfield performed at the time, showed no indication of groping. The Guardian was unable to independently verify the footage.

One woman who was referred to as “Carla” says that Copperfield had “groomed” her. In 1991, when she was 15, he started sending her various gifts and calling her late at night. When she turned 18, they engaged in consensual intercourse, Carla claims.

Copperfield’s name also appeared on Jeffrey Epstein’s documents.

The Entertainer and His Legal Team Denied the Accusations

Copperfield and his team denied any wrongdoing. The Vegas magician’s lawyers pointed out that no complaints had been made at venues he was performing in at the time and noted that drugs are “not a part of his world.”

Additionally, lawyers said that the groping allegations are entirely implausible. According to them, Copperfield was also unaware that the rumors about Epstein’s involvement in child trafficking were true.

Copperfield’s lawyers

Lawyers, however, confirmed Copperfield’s relationship with Carla but noted that the two had been in a consensual relationship for four years. The legal team also denied any involvement in grooming.

More recently, Copperfield was forced to postpone a show originally set to take place in February 2024 after Save the Children canceled its partnership with the illusionist. The magician slammed the “unjustified attacks” on his reputation and said that the show would still take place after certain additional preparations were made.
