Nevada Supreme Court Backs Nick Carter in Sexual Misconduct Case

The famous singer part of the Backstreet Boys can now push forward with his counter lawsuit filed over defamation and allegations of sexual misconduct

The Nevada Supreme Court earlier this week reaffirmed a lower court ruling effectively permitting one of the members of the famous Backstreet Boys to proceed with a counter lawsuit targeting a woman who accused him of rape.

Allegations of Sexual Assault

Several years ago, Melissa Schuman, a singer from a 2000s girl band known as Dream, accused Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys of sexual assault. The woman claimed that the singer sexually assaulted her back in 2003 and subsequently filed a lawsuit. Carter denied all allegations and his defense filed a countersuit in a Las Vegas court. In the counter lawsuit, the famous singer claimed that Schuman’s sexual assault allegations were fabricated and alleged that she conspired with others to “defame and extort” him.

As announced by KLAS, on Tuesday, the Nevada Supreme Court sided with Carter, acknowledging that he may have been defamed by the allegations of sexual assault. The ruling also allowed the Backstreet Boys member to proceed with his counter lawsuit. The Supreme Court’s ruling pointed to Carter’s claims that the Schumans “fabricated Melissa’s sexual assault allegations” with the help of Shannon Ruth, a woman who also claimed that she was raped by Carter, and Aaron Carter, Carter’s brother.

The Supreme Court ruling also considered the “ample” evidence provided by Carter which proved that Melissa Schuman’s story about her sexual contact with the Backstreet Boys band member changed over the years. The evidence put forth by Carter also proved that “the sexual interactions between him and Melissa were consensual.”

The latest ruling explains further: “All of this evidence, when viewed in the light most favorable to Carter arguably demonstrate that the sexual interactions between him and Melissa were consensual, that Melissa knew she was not sexually assaulted, and that the Schumans, Ruth, and Aaron conspired to defame Carter.”

Conspirators and Co-conspirators to Be Held Accountable

The defamation stemming from the sexual assault allegations resulted in losses for the popular band. Previously, Carter’s defense claimed that the Backstreet Boys lost a minimum of $2.3 million after the cancellation of a Christmas TV advertisement, as well as other endorsements and events, following the announcement of the allegations.

Liane Wakayama and Dale Hayes Jr., the attorneys representing Carter in the legal battle commented on the topic. They revealed that the Schumans, together with co-conspirators, can now be held accountable for their actions that sought to extort and defame Carter.
