California Lottery Celebrates 40 Years with $40 Scratcher

The new scratch-off game introduced last week is the most expensive ticket in the lottery’s history and has been received with excitement by players

The California Lottery has habitually produced some of the biggest winners. Incidentally, the lottery has also issued some of the most expensive tickets. Following this tradition, the lottery has now issued a $40 ticket to celebrate its 40 years in operation.

California Celebrates 40 Years of Play with Fitting Ticket Release

The new scratch-off ticket is a step up from the previous $30 ticket and comes under the motto “40 Years of Play.” The new ticket promises up to $15,000,000 in jackpot prizes with the state’s signature bear logo traipsing against the sun setting over palmy beaches.

Commenting on the new ticket, lottery director Harjinder K. Shergill Chima had this to say:

“For 40 years, we’ve been proud to raise extra funding for California’s public schools. We are excited to kick off 2025 with a new game that gives people a chance to celebrate with us. Since we sold our first game in 1985, together with our players and our retail partners, we’ve raised more than $46 billion to benefit students across California.”

The odds of winning the top prize from the new game are 1 in 3.04 million, which is not bad at all! Ten second-tier prizes run at $100,000 each and another third-tier set of 130 rewards which are worth $40,000 in each game. The overall odds of winning any prize from the lottery ticket, however, are pretty decent – 1 in 2.85!

California has been habitually in the lottery news cycle. In December, the winner of a Mega Millions jackpot moved to sue the lottery over the other half of a $400-million lottery prize won on December 8, 2023.

Lottery Stories Can Take Almost Any Turn

The prize had to be divided up between two identical tickets. However, the second recipient of the money never showed up to claim it. In those cases, the money ought to be forfeited back to the state, but the plaintiff is seeking to claim the other half of the reward.

In the meantime, wholesome lottery stories have been making headlines all over the country. In Pennsylvania, a couple with three kids won $7 million and vowed to use the money to take their children to a dreamed-for Walt Disney World journey as well as to push on with their education.
