Cyprus Gambling Regulator Introduces Self-Exclusion Platform

Cyprus’ new National Self-Exclusion Platform allows players to choose to exclude themselves voluntarily from any online bookmaker authorized in Cyprus

The National Betting Authority (NBA) of Cyprus has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering players to take control of their gambling habits. The National Self-Exclusion Platform (NSEP), launched during a press conference on February 20, 2024, marks a significant step forward in promoting responsible gambling practices.

Cyprus NBA’s NSEP Offers Flexible Self-Exclusion Options

Designed as part of the country’s Safer Gambling Strategy 2022-2025, the NSEP enables players to voluntarily exclude themselves from all online bookmakers licensed in Cyprus, either for a temporary period or indefinitely. By acknowledging the potential harm associated with their gambling activities, players can utilize this tool to exercise greater control over their behavior.

Ioanna Fiakkou, president of the NBA, expressed her satisfaction with the platform’s launch, emphasizing its importance in promoting safer gambling behavior and protecting vulnerable individuals. She highlighted the platform as “a robust tool for every player,” underscoring the NBA’s commitment to player protection and the establishment of a fair gambling environment.

Registration on the platform is simple and free, allowing players to set their self-exclusion preferences across all licensed betting service providers. Whether opting for temporary, long-term, or indefinite self-exclusion, players have the flexibility to tailor their preferences according to their individual needs.

Cyprus’ Self-Exclusion Platform Also Takes Aim at Match-Fixing

Furthermore, the NSEP not only restricts players from participating in any betting activities but also prevents them from opening new accounts during the self-exclusion period. This comprehensive approach aims to minimize the risk of problem gambling and protect individuals from potential harm.

Fiakkou extended a public invitation to all stakeholders to collaborate in efforts to strengthen the platform further. She emphasized the importance of including specific groups such as athletes in the platform’s operations, in partnership with relevant federations and governmental bodies.

Fiakkou further added: “Through this collaborative effort, we aim to fortify the fight against match-fixing and enhance transparency in sports, aligning with key objectives outlined in the Authority’s strategic framework. We are particularly satisfied to witness the realization of another significant milestone, as we advance towards achieving the goals set forth in the Safer Gambling Strategy, reinforcing protective measures for the public and fostering the industry’s sustainability in the right direction.”

The launch of the National Self-Exclusion Platform signifies a significant milestone in Cyprus’s efforts to promote responsible gambling and safeguard the public. As the platform continues to evolve and integrate additional functionalities, it is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering a sustainable and fair gambling sector.
