Unlucky Powerball Players Question Legitimacy of Wins

With four out of five top jackpots dropping in California, users online question the chances of huge prizes dropping in the same state

Last week, the second-biggest Powerball jackpot dropped. At the time, a lucky player from California secured the staggering $1.76 billion jackpot from the drawing on October 11, 2023, by guessing correctly all winning numbers. In light of the latest win, some users online questioned the credibility of Powerball wins. This is because, based on Powerball data, four of the top five largest jackpots were won in California.

As announced by The Daily Mail, the popular American lottery is under scrutiny and criticism online, with many users questioning how is it possible for the largest jackpots to drop in The Golden State. One social media user shared their concern via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, asking if California has “some type of rigged advantage,” when it comes to Powerball.

The same user addressed their concern to the language model chatbot, ChatGPT. When asking if there is some advantage, the chatbot replied that it is unlikely statistically for California to have so many winning jackpots. Moreover, ChatGPT suggested that to ensure trust, lotteries need to be transparent and fair.

While last week, the second-biggest jackpot from Powerball was won in California, the biggest ever jackpot from the game also dropped in the same state back in November 2022, a whopping $2.04 billion.

Besides the user mentioned above, many others criticized the chances of billion-dollar jackpots dropping primarily in California. One angry user wrote that just like the elections, the lottery is fixed too. Another person claimed: “Everything California touches has a corruption hand attached to it.”

Odds Are Slim, but Californians Do Not Give Up

The third-largest prize from Powerball was won back in 2016 when a staggering $1.58 billion jackpot was hit by three players, one from California, one from Florida and one from Tennessee. Earlier this year, another billion-dollar jackpot dropped in California, some $1.08 billion, the fourth largest. The fifth-largest prize from Powerball was won in March 2019, when a lucky player from Wisconsin won $768.4 million.

Statistically, the odds of winning a prize from Powerball are 1 in 24.9. However, the odds of winning the jackpot are slim, 1 in 292.2 million. Considering those chances, it does sound unlikely for jackpots to keep dropping in the same state. With that in mind, one online user suggested that California has the most jackpots because there are consistently more tickets purchased in the state. This user rejected claims for foul play, stating that while more purchased tickets don’t guarantee a win, the winner is more likely to be from California.

Well its good when someone wins, but I’m about to believe what the people in my community are saying. No one around here ever wins and it is always away from us. It’s always in the big cities. Now they say we are just going to stop giving our money away.

I work at a gas station in Texas and we sold well over $5,000 worth of Powerball for that jackpot that was won in Cali a few days back…one little gas station and we sold that much, makes ya wonder how much was sold overall in Texas, yet they have never hit Powerball jackpot in this state…seems like the jackpot is rigged for the state that charges the most taxes on lottery so the state gets a bunch out of it…little naive to think they r just gonna randomly give out billions to random ppl

This lottery needs to be changed! An equitable amount needs to be shared among states and players. One person doesn’t need this much money! How do we get the Multi state lottery association to implement changes!

I Do understand, that California’s spend a lot more then other states and have a whole lot more people who gamble. How is it even possible that there is way to often just 1 winning ticket in the country.

Who are you to say no one needs that kind of money? I’m sure who ever won has a family to support probably a chairity they donate to.none of the hater’s would say anything if they won then a friend or family members wouldn’t want no changes then.find out how much $$$was spent on tickets in cali &compare it to your chicken shit State, that’s why Cali has the wins they spend the money.

I think when the jackpot is that high it shouldn’t be just one winner all the time a lot of people are playing so all that money it should be multiple winners if that is the maybe it should have a cap on it 🤷🏽‍♀️ just my opinion

I THINK EACH STATE SHOULD HAVE THE LOTTERY IN THEIR OWN STATE. INSTEAD OF ALL STATES BEING IN THE SAME LOTTERY. NEED TO BE FAIR ABOUT IT. WE WOULD HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF BEING A WINNER. EVEN IF IT’S NOT AS MUCH MONEY AS THIS LAST ONE HAD. LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD BE SATISFIED WITH A MAYBE A MILLION. I KNOW I WOULD. THEY DO NEED TO MAKE SOME CHANGES ON THE WAY THE IS PLAYED.

Like on the Episode of the TV series Monk. It’s set in California. The balls were painted with metallic paint and a magnet pulled out the painted balls. Now of course it’s not real. But the odds 4-5 of the biggest Lotteries “EVER” to fall in the same state Highly unlikely.
Even when Tennessee and Florida was part of the Big Prize once , makes you wonder if the winners knew each other. I just don’t believe in Coincidences Ever. If you dig hard enough the truth will come forth. Most people quit just before the answer shines through. Just my opinion.

People know someone picked the numbers before the drawing right? I’ve never won more than $100 from any lottery and I drove trucks for years buying tickets in every state I passed thru, but I never cried about it.sore losers.

All the other states just build up the jackpot for California. I’m for boycotting the lottery and see what happens. Pick a couple of weeks and keep your money and see what happens. I’ve questioned the lottery for years. I’ve even asked for list of winners, not names but towns and amounts. I already knew one place always had the most winners and the biggest wins. I found after my questioning more places started having a few more winners.

      October 19, 2023 at 5:37 pm

Yeah I’m sure your questions scared them into spreading the wins around.get the hell outta here.you did have a good idea though keep your money don’t play then you won’t have a reason to snivel.

I use to play hundreds of tickets when the drawing was aired on TV but after they further rigged chances to win when California couldn’t put the fix in on time back in 22 where they didn’t show the numbers untill the next day where they figured the lottery in general that they didn’t need to show the numbers no longer made it easier to cheat the public is what we have today simple if we don’t see the numbers untill they figure what numbers have been played then they can pull off there fix it need to be shown as it use to be.

You’re right Reda. Georgia state has been left out of the jackpot winning since this governor been in office. Citizens in this state wanted the lottery but the now governor don’t. We need winners here now. People have stopped buying a lot of tickets here

  • Juanita
    October 16, 2023 at 4:22 pm

I think that it’s ridiculous that one ticket is always the case when the jackpot is claimed I mean all the money each state is generating from ticket sales it’s always one winner and the winner is always a person that is well off already never someone that really needs money financially. It’s definitely enough money for at least 2 or 3 people with a chance to win a piece of the pie.

I can’t prove it, but it does seem impossible for California to keep winning the largest jackpots without some kind of foul play or advantage. The last three in a row have been in California. Some may believe that because they have more people in their state that is the reason they win because there are more tickets purchased there. There is no validity to that because just maybe more people don’t play or have money to play. There are way more questions than answers, but something just doesn’t seem right in this case. The lottery can be manipulated with all the technology available, not saying that it has although it is possible. Just my humble opinion. Never the less I do think an independent investigation should be done to determine how what is happening and keeps happening is possible if there isn’t any fraud.

  • Nora

Is it weird that the state with the highest state , local and city taxes, where if the lump sum is taken, the rest goes to the state, wins the biggest amount of super prizes, its crooked.

  • Joe

I agree with everyone that commented. I am calif born in a small town! No matter how much I put into buying tickets I have never won or has anyone from this town.
Calif has alot of people and is overcrowded! But it comes down to the government and politics. Now they want to control your money and you.
As a country we the people need to take are stand and start cleaning house to tell these high up’s what we want done to change. WE are the people.

I totally agree. When I began playing online, I had the winning midday numbers. I received an email from Ga Lottery stating that some of my numbers were played, but my numbers that would have bought me a win were not. I was very furious when I found out I didn’t win because I had the numbers for that particular drawing. Yes Georgia Lottery is crooked…. Signed upset at online betting with Ga. Lottery

The prize distribution must be reviewed; the other smaller prizes must be increased for more people to win more significant prizes, instead of making just one person (who may even be a first time player), an overnighbillionaires, while consistent players get to win $2, $4, $8 prizes. That’s not fair!.

I live in Northern California, and I always find it funny that when there are these huge jackpots, they are always in urban, more densely populated Southern California, never in rural, less populated Northern California. I’m also starting to think that the Lottery system is rigged, because if the Winning Numbers were REALLY PICKED AT RANDOM, the jackpots wouldn’t always be in Southern California. I guarantee you the Lottery system is rigged for Southern California. I won’t be playing the Lottery anymore.

I think that when a jackpot total reaches say 50 million. Instead of continually rolling it over. They should keep drawing numbers until someone wins. That way more people will win and they could avoid these ridiculous billion dollar jackpots.

I have been playing Ca scratch off tickets on and off in small spurts for the last 18 years. I have played the big jackpots for draw games when they get big like the mega or power ball. Yes I have believed that the ca lottery system is rigged aswepl as the multi state committee. They to me are like the NSA. They know where you go what you do and what the probability of you buying another ticket or draw game. They know based on the ads they pay for, the commercials, the billboards. They have your digital footprint that shows on Google maps where you go. They are not going to just give away billions. They have to know because otherwise if God decided like we all seem to think he’s not in charge. Because there just is not ever an impact made on society by a lottery winner. Plain and simple. The lottery/NSA knows how long your statistically going to live and wether they can extract the money back. The government does own all our money as well as the lottery. I believe they let out small amounts of big winners, the bigger prizes they send to desolate far off gas stations or towns where the people are to poor to buy them. Second they dont check on the store owners or workers that sell the tickets so the stores also have the ability to poach the scratchers. Third they never tell us how many total scratch off tickets they make for one game. They tell you the prizes remaining. But they have not made all those winning tickets yet. It even says so on the website. So they literally are running a backwards money laundering scheme where they decide we need to make x amount of $ before we give x amount back. The prizes are never all always claimed because they are not all made. The lottery website after a scratcher game has been up for a while used to show all the jack pot winners and give a number like 7/8 jackpot prizes have been claimed for like 10 million. But you never read or see the names of all 7 people. Maybe 1 unlucky person gets put on blast but the rest seem to be ghosts. The ca lottery started turning over the scratcher games faster now like every 60 or 90 days we get new games. And I can tell by counting the winning rotations through that time they are manipulating the $. Otherwise I am pretty sure I would have won something closer to 10s of thousands or it would have been nice to hope to win millions one day. But I’m overly patient and waiting for a complete overhaul of their secret corruption.

I agree with all the comments because I have been playing the same number for three months straight and only hit for no more than 13 dollars, yrs it is rigged only for people who live in California to win my believe.
