NCPG Introduces Tribal Advisory Council to Tackle Gambling Issues

The Tribal Advisory Council aims to foster an appreciation of native cultures in the context of gambling, ensuring that both native and non-native communities benefit from culturally sensitive approaches

In order to tackle gambling-related issues among Native American communities, the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has formed its Tribal Advisory Council. NCPG is the only national nonprofit organization that focuses on reducing the economic and social impact of gambling addiction, and its new program seeks to foster closer cooperation with tribal gaming organizations.

Tribal Advisory Council Established to Foster Cultural Understanding in Gambling Practices

The purpose of the Tribal Advisory Council is to promote an understanding of native cultures in relation to gambling so as to ensure that both natives and non-natives benefit from culturally sensitive practices. The members of this body will provide their knowledge in support of NCPG’s undertakings while taking into account the history and sovereignty of Indians together with other leaders and experts from such communities.

Keith Whyte who serves as executive director at NCPG stated: “Our work with tribes is based on a deep respect for Tribal sovereignty and our core values of neutrality, collaboration, respect and credibility. We have a responsibility to listen and learn, as well as the opportunity to share our knowledge as we seek to reduce the social costs of gambling addiction and improve health and wellness in all communities. The relationships and partnerships we have forged over the years are the strong foundation for this exciting new project.”

NCPG Taps Tribal Gaming Experts for New Advisory Council Ahead of National Conference

The Council’s founding members include several notable figures from the tribal gaming sector, such as Raquel Buari, Executive Vice President of Four Winds Casinos, Jacob Coin, Executive Advisor to the San Manuel Tribal Council, Shannon Dictson, President of the Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico, Ray Pineault, President and CEO of Mohegan, and James Siva, Chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association.

Valerie Spicer and Sheila Morago, leaders of Trilogy Group, have been tapped by NCPG to facilitate activities undertaken by The Council owing to their combined experience of over 50 years working in government relations, business enterprises as well tribal gaming. Spicer expressed her delight at having it established while emphasizing that tribal gaming is a cornerstone within the wider gambling industry hence its effects on communities cannot be ignored.

She also underscored the need to support those affected by this form of entertainment among different native cultures without forgetting about the complexities surrounding such issues within reservation boundaries.

The Council will be actively involved in NCPG’s upcoming National Conference on Gambling Addiction and Responsible Gambling, scheduled for July 17-19, 2024, in San Diego, California.
