Illegal Gambling Probe in Arizona Uncovers Record Weapons
The Arizona Department of Public Safety helped the state gambling regulator, the Arizona Department of Gaming, in a recent illegal gambling raid in Tucson
An investigation into a suspected illegal gambling operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals along with the seizure of hundreds of firearms in Arizona.
Cash, Guns, Ammunition and Accessories Seized
On Monday, the regulatory agency in charge of gambling activities, the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG), announced that it conducted an extensive investigation into a suspected illegal gambling operation that involved gun raffles taking place in Tucson. ADG’s Intelligence Agents, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) conducted raids at a suspected venue.
The actions of law enforcement and the state regulator proved to be beneficial as two individuals, suspected of being involved were detained. Notably, the raids saw police seize a total of 452 firearms, as well as a large quantity of accessories and ammunition. Some $4,000 in cash was seized as well.
Generally speaking, raffles are organized by selling tickets to participants and a winner of the raffle is selected on a random basis. The ADG did not disclose details on the particular way the gun raffles were organized. It is also unclear whether or not any of the guns that were seized were obtained legally and for how long the raffle operated for.
Still, the gambling regulator encouraged Arizona residents to be cautious when engaging in any form of gambling activities, regardless if social games, charitable gambling, bingo or raffles. Moreover, the ADG asked everyone who suspects illegal gambling to file a report.
The Police Operation Helps Take More than 450 Weapons off the Street
Colonel Jeffrey Glover, AZDPS’ director, praised the efforts of the ADG that played a key role in the recent operation which seized hundreds of weapons. “Thanks to their efforts, two criminals are off the streets, and over 450 firearms are no longer available for criminal use,” he added. Finally, Colonel Glover said that the AZDPS is prepared to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and provide crucial support in the fight against unlawful activities.
“Record-breaking seizures like this only further highlight the criminal activity that illegal gambling establishments attract when they go unregulated, posing a significant threat to public safety.“
Jackie Johnson, director of the Arizona Department of Gaming
Jackie Johnson, ADG’s director, added that operations such as the recent one reveal that illegal gambling can play a role in contributing to other criminal activities. She praised the efforts of the agency’s experts who remain dedicated to combatting unlawful gambling across Arizona.
“Their thorough and diligent efforts play a crucial role in protecting the public and ensuring compliance with Arizona’s gaming laws,” Johnson added. In conclusion, ADG’s director thanked the AZDPS for its support in the recent illegal gambling case.
