Rivers Casino Philadelphia Investigates Recent Cyberattack
The casino is reportedly notifying customers who may have been affected by the data breach
Casino operators are often targeted by data breaches and dedicate millions to protect the information of their customers. Similar to banks, which are also subjected to cyberattacks, casinos proactively try to protect themselves. Despite those efforts, successful cyberattacks are increasingly common, at least in the last few years.
The Casino Is Investigating a Data Breach
Only recently, a Pennsylvania-based casino became the latest victim of a cyberattack that may have affected private customer data, media outlets reveal. That is the case of Rivers Casino Philadelphia, which suffered a data breach recently that may have exposed personal information to unauthorized individuals.
Details on the matter a scarce but what’s known so far is that an unauthorized person was able to access and may have obtained files from Rivers Casino Philadelphia servers. The operator initiated an immediate investigation into the potential data breach, looking into whether or not any data was obtained or viewed.
It is currently unclear whether or not the cyberattack may have affected employee data or customer information. Rivers Casino Philadelphia is also yet to confirm how many people may have been affected by the cyberattack, and if so, what personal information may have been accessed in light of the incident.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the popular casino started to notify potentially affected customers, whose information may have been accessed by an unauthorized individual. As explained by Rivers Casino Philadelphia’s spokesperson, Jack Horner, an investigation uncovered that “an unauthorized actor accessed and/or took certain files stored on our computer servers.” It is yet to be seen how many guests may have been affected by the data breach and what personal information may have been obtained without authorization.
In light of the potential data breach reported by Rivers Casino Philadelphia, Levi & Korsinsky, LLP, a popular law firm, announced the launch of an investigation on whether or not affected individuals may be subject to compensation. “If you have received a notice about the data breach, you may be entitled to compensation. There is no cost or obligation to participate,” reads a statement from the law firm.
Cyberattacks Continue to Target Gambling Companies
Over the last few years, there have been a number of cyberattacks against recognizable gaming and hospitality operators. For example, in 2023, approximately around the same time, Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts, two recognizable high-profile companies in the casino and hospitality industry, were impacted by cyberattacks.
Last month, one person, suspected of being a member of a hacker group called Scattered Spider, which was behind the cyberattacks against MGM and Caesars, was arrested. Per a report by Bloomberg, the 19-year-old suspect was charged with wire fraud in relation to the cyber issues against the two companies.
