The 73-year-old businessman shared a video from his hospital bed, explaining that doctors were conducting tests to determine the cause of his memory lapses

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, the well-known Houston furniture tycoon and sports gambler, has checked into St. Luke’s Hospital at the Texas Medical Center due to what he called “cognitive” problems. McIngvale, who’s famous for his enthusiastic backing of Houston sports teams and his big-money sports wagers, told his supporters and clients that he thinks he will bounce back.

Mattress Mack Shares Health Update from Hospital Bed, Stays Optimistic

The 73-year-old businessman posted a video on social media from his hospital bed. He said doctors were running tests to find out why he had been forgetting things. McIngvale talked about two scary moments. Once, he could not remember what day it was. Another time, he drove past his usual exit—something he had not done in over 40 years. Even though these events worried him, McIngvale stayed positive. He praised the great care he was getting from the doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s.

In true Mattress Mack style, McIngvale used his social media update to tell his followers about his health and to promote his business. He urged viewers to check out the ongoing Labor Day Super Sale at Gallery Furniture, his Houston-based furniture store chain.

McIngvale’s tough spirit and skill for marketing have made him a loved figure in Houston. People know him for connecting his sales promotions to local sports events and offering customers big refunds if his favorite teams win.

Mattress Mack Receives Overwhelming Community Support During Hospital Stay

After news of his hospital stay spread, an outpouring of support came from the community. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and US Congressman Chip Roy joined many public figures in sending their hopes and best wishes for McIngvale to get better. The businessman’s social media posts have also received thousands of comments from people wishing him well showing how much people in the area value him as a local hero.

This is not the first time McIngvale has faced tough times. He stood out during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 when he turned his stores into places for flood victims to stay. Folks in Houston love him because he has got a big personality and he is always ready to help.

Even with his ongoing health issues, McIngvalestays upbeat about getting better. He thinks he will leave the hospital soon, and believes being with his family and keeping up with his business and community will help him recover. As football season begins and the Houston Astros lead their division, McIngvale seems cheered by the upcoming sports events showing he is not ready to step out of the public eye just yet.
