Brit Wins $166K After Forgetting to Cancel Lottery Subscription

A British man has won a huge prize thanks to his, in his own words, “incompetence.” The thing is that the man wanted to cancel his Postcode Lottery entry, only to forget to do so and accidentally become the winner of a six-figure sum.

Incompetence Ended Up Paying Off

James Adams, 31, had promised his girlfriend, Rouhanna Coulthard, to cancel his Postcode Lottery entry in order to save some money. At the time, Coulthard wanted the two of them to save more money for their wedding and thought that the lottery was an unjustified expense.

Adams, who is a motion graphic designer, admitted that he intended to listen to his fiancée and cancel the subscription to the lottery. However, he ended up forgetting due to “being lazy and silly.” This ended up netting him some GBP 125,000 ($166,310).

In an interview with The Independent, Adams joked that his “incompetence” had really paid off. Coulthard, meanwhile, was thankful that her significant other had forgotten to heed her request. She jokingly added that she forgives him.

Adams and Coulthard, however, weren’t the only Postcode Lottery winners. Per the lottery rules, the entire postcode won a GBP 1 million ($1.33 million) prize that they ended up sharing with 7 other neighbors in Kingswood. These included a bride-to-be and a man who had been experiencing health issues for many years.

Not the Only Story of Its Kind

A similar thing to Adams and Coulthard’s story happened last year, when an English woman won $253,500 from the Postcode Lottery after continuing to play despite her husband’s lottery skepticism. Her husband had even asked her to cancel her subscription, which she never did.

In this case, even her husband was glad that she had ignored his muttering.

In more recent news, an EuroMillions ticket in the UK minted a new multi-millionaire. The winner, who kept his anonymity, won a life-changing prize of a staggering $35 million.

In the meantime, a separate play won a similarly impressive prize of $14.29 million, beating the 1 in 45,057,474 odds of winning.
