Betting and Gaming Council Seeks Visionary CEO

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), the standards body for the UK’s regulated betting and gaming industry, is searching for its next chief executive. With the gambling sector undergoing substantial transformations and entering its fifth year, the BGC seeks a leader who can inspire the industry, foster trust, enhance confidence internally, and collaborate with external stakeholders.

Only Industry Veterans Can Apply

The BGC’s new CEO will replace current chief executive Michael Dugher, who will become the organization’s next chair as Brigid Simmonds steps down in April. This reshuffle should bring a fresh perspective to the organization, allowing it to better adapt to rising industry challenges and regulatory uncertainties during a tumultuous period for the UK gambling sector. 

Reporting to the executive chairman, the chief executive will play a pivotal role in shaping the BGC’s future. Responsibilities include building and leading a visionary team aligning with their strategic vision for the organization. Such requirements significantly limit the organization’s choices, requiring a seasoned industry professional knowledgeable of current industry trends.

We require an individual who can advocate for the industry at the most senior levels, build and maintain trusted relationships, influence the political and media debate, and work with a wide range of stakeholders.

Michael Dugher noted that he is looking forward to welcoming a new CEO in the spring as he assumes the role of chairman. The current CEO’s substantial experience within the organization should allow him to quickly bring his successor up to speed, avoiding significant disruptions to the BGC’s operations.

The Council Requires a Fresh Perspective

Established in 2019, the BGC is committed to prioritizing customer welfare, elevating standards beyond regulatory requirements, and ensuring a safer and fairer betting and gaming environment for all participants. As the representative body for the UK’s regulated betting and gaming sector, excluding the National Lottery, the BGC collaborates with diverse entities, including betting shops, casinos, and online platforms.

The BGC has directed most of its efforts to protect the gambling sector’s interests amidst the ongoing UK gambling reform. The organization reiterated its support for high standards and balanced, proportionate, and efficient reforms. Some of the measures outlined in the white paper were promoted by the BGC, helping the UK usher in a new age of safer gambling.
