South Carolina Man Turns Grocery Trip into $500K Payday

A lucky man from South Carolina has won $500,000 from the South Carolina Education Lottery while on an unassuming trip to buy a loaf of bread. The lucky winner spoke with lottery representatives about his win, saying that it felt “surreal.”

The Man Certainly “Got that Bread”

According to the SC Education Lottery, the winner won the mouth-watering prize from a Ruby Red Treasures scratch-off ticket. While the lucky lottery enthusiast preferred to remain anonymous, the lottery vaguely described him as a Midlands man.

The lottery’s official release confirmed that the winning ticket was sold at the Piggly Wiggly on S. Guignard Dr. in Sumter. The store got a $5,000 incentive bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Speaking to lottery representatives about the win, the Midlands man said that he decided to purchase the $10 lottery ticket while on a grocery trip. Originally planning to only buy a loaf of bread, the man thus found himself with a $500,000 ticket in his hands.

The man said that when he scratched the ticket, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

The man said that he isn’t sure what to do with the prize yet. However, he said that “nothing has changed” and plans to continue his life as usual, at least for now.

For context, $500,000 is Ruby Red Treasures’ top prize, with the chances of winning one being 1 in 1,176,000. As of the time of this writing only one of the original 6 top prizes remains unclaimed. In addition to that, there are still 18 second-tier prizes of $10,000 that have yet to be claimed.
