Recreational Poker Old-Timer Triumphs at USPO Event
The lucky man was revealed to be Peter Placey, a businessman from California, who has enjoyed poker recreationally for some 40 years
Many people would look at poker and think of it as a game that is being dominated by pros, leaving little chance for casual players to be successful. However, one businessman from California just proved this notion wrong.
California Businessman Dominated Event #5 of the USPO
A recreational player made poker history after defeating all of his opponents to claim first place. The lucky man was revealed to be Peter Placey, a businessman from California, who has enjoyed poker recreationally for some 40 years. After an impressive run at the Event #5 inside the PokerGO Studio, Placey has finally won a title he can be proud of.
After taking the first spot, Placey took $224,000 in winnings. His final adversary, Qinghai Pan, took the second spot with $144,000 in winnings. Anil Jivani rounded up the top three with $104,000 in winnings.
The event was part of the 2026 US Poker Open (USPO). According to a report by PokerNews, Placey has also participated in earlier editions of the event. In 2022, for example, he finished tenth, winning $19,800.
The player told the poker news outlet that he loves playing at the PokerGO Studio, since it seems to bring him luck. He also said that he loves to admire other players and enjoys the opportunity to face some real poker heavyweights.
How the Event Went
The $10,000 buy-in event had a total prize pool of $800,000. Placey had a strong opener, securing a chip lead on the first day of the event. Although some of the participants included major poker pros, such as Nick Schulman, Jesse Lonis, Cherish Andrews and Brock Wilson, Placey held his ground.
Andrews went out on the second day of the event, despite her strong performance. She was followed by Justin Zaki and Wilson. Jivani then took the third spot, leaving Placey and Pan to battle it out for the first spot. In a rather poetic development, the two of them were both players with careers outside of poker, with Pan being a doctor.
While Pan had a strong chip lead, PokerNews said that Placey’s flopped trips against top pair turned into quads to defeat Pan.
