No More Grub: MGM Resorts Buffets Reportedly Shutting for Good in LV
- Las Vegas’ MGM Resorts buffets are shutting down, a source close to the matter said
- The original reporting, done by Scott Roeben, a Casino.org and Vital Vegas writer, said that the information was leaked during a meeting of a high-ranking MGM executive
- Buffets are shifting towards a high-end dining experience, doing away with the concepts of old
Vital Vegas, a prominent media outlet that covers the Las Vegas business, entertainment, and cultural scene, has released a new report arguing that MGM Resorts’ remaining buffets in Las Vegas are going to be shuttered by Q2 2027.
The move will affect the Excalibur and Bellagio buffets, along with the Wicked Spoon at Cosmopolitan, leaving just a handful of buffets across the city’s gaming entertainment venues.
Las Vegas to Shed Its MGM Resorts Buffets
The company has already confirmed that the MGM Grand Buffet will have its last day in operation on May 31, 2026. The news was shared by Vital Vegas and Casino.org writer Scott Roeben, who attributed the information to a meeting hosted by Mike Neubecker, COO of MGM Grand, Excalibur, New York-New York, Mandalay Bay, and Luxor.
The shift away from the mass-buffet experience has been long coming as the demographics of people shifted as well, and most people preferred to combine their trips to casinos with a finer wining and dining experience, opting for more delectable choices instead of mass grub.
Casinos can only welcome the shift in consumer appetite as they too stand to benefit in a major way, as buffets have been generating losses with the food priced well below its market tag to give people an incentive to stick around and spend money on gaming afterwards.
Buffets Either Disappearing or Shifting in High-End Gear
The shuttering of MGM’s buffets in Las Vegas would have an immediate impact on hundreds of jobs, with up to 500 people employed across these eateries and servicing them. It is not clear whether the people will be reassigned elsewhere or will have to seek new employment.
The buffet experience is also edging closer to a higher-end dining experience, with the reinvented options now possibly featuring $175 per person eating options, but also making up for it with top-notch seafood, carved meats, and all-you-can-drink options.
