New Jersey’s DGE Imposes Fines Against William Hill, Amelco

The monetary sanction against Amelco was $10,000, while William Hill received a $20,000 fine

Late last month, two betting operators in New Jersey received monetary penalties from the state’s gambling regulator, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), due to alleged breaches of the established gambling regulations.

William Hill Hit With $20K Civil Penalty

The first fine was a $20,000 civil penalty against William Hill, and it is related to accepting bets on past events. As explained by the DGE, the fine is “regarding conduct from February 2022 until April 2023 in which William Hill had permitted wagering on sporting events after the outcomes of the events were already known.”

The betting operator allegedly accepted more than three dozen in-person bets between February 23 and February 24, 2022, on a dozen college basketball games that have already concluded. While William Hill had taken action to remedy the situation and void the wagers it did so after paying out approximately $5,000 in winning bets before the error was eliminated.

The DGE acknowledged the operator’s efforts to remedy the situation, as well as its collaboration in light of the regulatory violations. As a result, the gambling watchdog reached a settlement that involves the imposing of a $20,000 civil penalty against William Hill. The fine was signed by DGE’s interim director, Mary Jo Flaherty.

Having considered the remedial action taken by William Hill in response to these violations; and having considered the Stipulation of Settlement which the parties executed and finding sufficient legal and factual support for the recommended penalty therein. I hereby ORDER that the settlement be adopted and that a civil penalty in the amount of $20,000.00 be imposed upon William Hill, payable upon receipt of an invoice from the Division’s Revenue Unit,

Amelco Accepts a Prohibited Bet, Receives a Fine

Besides the fine against William Hill, the New Jersey gambling regulator announced another civil penalty. In the second action, the DGE imposed a fine against Amelco, the sports betting provider of PlayUp.

The fine comes after the company “permitted wagering on unapproved and statutorily prohibited events.” The breach in question was a $1 bet related to the 2024 presidential election. While the bet was voided and the money returned to the bettor, Amelco agreed to a $10,000 settlement in light of the regulatory breach.
