Michigan Casino Event Raises Awareness of Human Trafficking
Jessica Kay, a human trafficking survivor and advocate, was a key speaker during the recent event taking place at the Northern Waters Casino Resort
Across the United States, human trafficking is recognized as a serious crime. Usually, people found guilty of such a crime can face up to 20 years in prison along with a hefty fine. In cases of aggravating circumstances such as death, culprits may face even life imprisonment.
Human trafficking and domestic violence were two topics discussed during a recent meeting at the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, Michigan. The event was attended by nearly 250 people who heard the story of Jessica Kay, a human trafficking survivor and advocate, as announced by WLUC.
Kay’s efforts help raise awareness of domestic violence and human trafficking. As a survivor herself, she identified the importance of helping others by advocating and promoting a support system that can be used by other victims.
Geno Basanese, Michigan State Police Community’s service trooper, also joined Kay during the event. He disclosed methods on how people can prevent human trafficking.
Basanese warned about the dangers of human trafficking even in small towns, saying that culprits can target vulnerable people via the Internet. “You know the cell phones have been just one of the bigger challenges there, where you can talk to anybody throughout the world at any time,” he said, adding that it is imperative for parents to know who their children are communicating with online.
Identifying the Importance of Helping Others
Speaking about the support victims of domestic violence and human trafficking can receive, Kay said that a large-scale system helps with that process. Focusing on her journey from a human trafficking survivor to advocate, she said: “I recognized and realized that I was just a stack of paper moving from one desk to another.”
This is when Kay realized that she could make a difference. After receiving her master’s degree, she moved up the ranks of social services and started helping even more people by advocating. The recent event at the Northern Waters Casino Resort marked Kay’s first visit to the Wolverine State.
Recognized as a premium gaming and entertainment destination, Northern Waters Casino offers a range of gambling options, including slots, table games and bingo. The casino resort also brings a variety of dining options, as well as a golf course and other amenities.
