New York City FC Doing Great at Home
NYCFC have suffered only three losses at home in all competitions in 2024. The last time they lost in New York was in September when they got demolished by the Philadelphia Union 5:1. It was a shocking defeat, especially given that they were the ones who dominated the game.
However, since that loss, they’re undefeated on home turf, drawing 1:1 with Inter Miami, then going to beat FC Cincinnati twice (3:2 and 3:1), as well as Nashville SC 3:1.
NYCFC’s strongest weapon is their offense, which is no surprise given that each of their top four most valuable players are forwards. Their defense, however, doesn’t look very solid. Their captain Thiago Martins is a fine center-back, but apart from him, the Sky Blues don’t seem to have an elite defender on the roster.
Gray Tayvon has recorded seven assists in the MLS, which makes him the 3rd most prolific assist-maker on the NYCFC squad, but the Jamaican right-back has been way better offensively than defensively.
Knowing that their defense can be somewhat leaky at times, the obvious question is whether that’s something the Red Bulls can take advantage of. So, can they?
The Mood is Good in the NY Red Bulls Locker Room
The New York Red Bulls made it to the Conference semis after knocking out last season’s MLS Cup winners out of the competition. They beat Columbus Crew 2-0 in the series, after winning the game in Ohio 1:0 and beating them on penalties in New York in the rematch (after 2:2 in regulation).
The best thing about the win over the champions is the way the Red Bulls did it. They had a 2:1 lead after the 6th minute of stoppage time when a goal by the Crew took the game to penalties.
They started the shootout badly, conceding the first goal and missing their first shot. Despite all that, they managed to get a win in the end. Their goalie Carlos Coronel was their hero in that game. He was also brilliant in Game 1 against the Crew, saving eight shots at goal.
However, if we’re looking at the entire 2024 Red Bulls campaign, he hasn’t been that great. In fact – similarly to NYCFC – the Red Bulls too have a somewhat unreliable defense. Their offense, on the other hand, looks pretty good.
New York City FC vs. New York Red Bulls Prediction
We think this is going to end in a draw. However, we don’t think this is going to be a boring affair. On the contrary, we expect to see plenty of goals.
Our prediction is that each team will score at least two goals, so the final score could be 2:2, which is something that has never happened in the Hudson River Derby. But there’s a first time for everything!
Pick: Correct Score 2:2
