Rapper and television personality Flavor Flav took an unusual turn at a local government gathering in Nevada this week, successfully advocating for plans for a large-scale event celebrating female Olympic athletes. The proposal was “SHE Weekend” and after a brief but memorable conversation with county officials, the official go-ahead was given.

At a meeting at the Clark County Government Center on May 19, the hip-hop icon took the podium to pitch his idea for a multi-day Las Vegas celebration. However, in his eagerness to describe the project, he began talking without first introducing himself, a formality in such meetings. This drew an interjection from a commissioner asking him to formally state his name for the record, which drew laughter from those in attendance. 

The performer, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., quickly apologized, introduced himself, and continued. He was said to have adopted a more subdued tone than his usual on-stage persona, probably to keep a professional atmosphere during the proceedings. 

The proposal itself was received well, though the start was awkward. The county commissioners eventually approved the event unanimously. It is scheduled for July 16 through July 19. The highlight will be a parade along the Las Vegas Strip, with a concert and other related events.

Earlier this year, he had talked about wanting to create a meaningful tribute to female Olympians, especially after moments of public controversy that overshadowed their accomplishments.
