NFL Expands Global Reach with Up to 10 International Games

The NFL’s international expansion is no longer an afterthought, quickly evolving into a key part of the league’s identity. Team owners approved a measure this week to increase the number of international games to as many as 10 per season starting in 2027, from the current limit of eight. This move demonstrates confidence in overseas markets and a willingness to adapt to new circumstances.

Teams Can No Longer Protect Home Matchups

The move follows a steady climb in international games, with the 2026 season already scheduled to include nine games abroad, eight organized by the league, plus a separate London game tied to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ long-standing agreement with Wembley Stadium. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, the NFL needed approval from the players’ union.

However, thanks to the new measure, the league will have a more extensive global schedule, perhaps even evolving into a weekly international showcase. With the increase in the number of games, owners also approved a measure that would remove a rule protecting certain home matchups from being moved overseas. In the past, franchises could select two games to be played at their home stadiums.

While expanding the number of overseas games gives the league more flexibility, not every team might like the change, especially those wary of losing ticket revenue and local fan engagement. Travel remains another significant concern, especially regarding games in Asia. Long flights and recovery time could test players and degrade the quality of games.

2026 Is Shaping Up to Be an Exciting Year for the NFL

The NFL’s 2026 schedule offers a peek into what’s to come. Games will be held in seven countries on four continents, including first-time stops in Melbourne, Australia, and Paris, France. Other host cities include London, Madrid, Munich, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City. The season will otherwise start as usual, with a Wednesday kickoff on September 9, pushed forward to accommodate the league’s first international game.

Amazon Prime and Netflix will broadcast a series of games over the season, with holiday matchups on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The ambitious schedule reflects the NFL’s evolving approach to its calendar. Thanksgiving week will feature five games, including a rare Wednesday night matchup, while Christmas Day will once again include a triple-header.

The 2026 season will conclude with Super Bowl 61 on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. It will also be the first time the championship falls on Valentine’s Day. For now, a Super Bowl played overseas remains unlikely. However, it is now clear that international games are no longer occasional highlights but a regular part of the NFL’s repertoire.
