Reasons Why Argentina Should Be Even Bigger Favorites

Argentina is the best team on the planet, the evidence being that La Albiceleste are the reigning champions of the FIFA World Cup. They’re also the defending champs of the Copa America, which they won three years ago in Brazil by beating the hosts in the final.

On their road to the title, they also beat Colombia. They did it in the semifinal of the previous tournament, winning the game after penalties. This is probably the reason why Argentina’s odds to win on July 14 aren’t as short as you’d imagine.

However, we do think they deserve to be considered huge favorites in the Final. It’s just that Lionel Messi and his teammates have been great since coming to the United States, winning four of their five Copa America 2024 games in regular 90 minutes.

The only one they didn’t win in regulation was the quarterfinal game with Ecuador. They won the game on penalties, with Messi being their only player to miss. However, that was a glitch in the matrix as evident from the fact that they then went on to beat Canada routinely 2:0 in the semis.

Can Colombia Ruin the Party for Messi & Co?

Colombia came to the United States as a moderate favorite. They were expected to finish second in their group, but thanks to Brazil’s blunders, they finished at the top. As a result, they got themselves an easy opponent in the quarterfinal – Panama.

They destroyed them 5:0, booking a spot in the semifinal. That’s where they met with Uruguay, which was a slight favorite ahead of the game. However, Colombia scored a goal in the first half, after which they parked the bus in front of their goal. They started playing extremely defensively especially after one of their players got red-carded.

This approach worked for them as Marcelo Bielsa’s men were unable to find the net. They did try loads of times in the second 45 minutes. Uruguay had the ball in their possession for 75% of the time, making eight goal attempts along the way.

Argentina vs. Colombia Prediction

Colombia’s defensive approach worked against Uruguay, but will it work against Uruguay’s northern neighbors? Our prediction is that it won’t. We think that Lionel Messi and his teammates will find a way to find the net in the Final. In fact, they’ll probably do it more than once.
