Texas Gov Supports Legalization of Sports Gambling in Lone Star State
Gov. Greg Abbott has given an official nod of approval to the possibility of sports betting, after years of intense lobbying from local leaders and outside forces

Governors can make or break legislation, using the power to veto draft laws passed by both chambers and send them back for reconsideration or doggedly refusing to let them come into force.
Sports betting advocates in Texas will have one thing fewer to worry about as Gov. Greg Abbott told the Houston Chronicle, a respected local media outlet, that he has no intention to throw curveballs at gambling legislation, and that – should sports gambling hit his desk, he would sign it into law.
Gov. Abbott Gives the “Aye” for Online Sports Betting
Gov. Abbott showed himself appraised of current events, suggesting that Texans are already engaging in online sports betting, and he specifically said that he had no opposition against the interactive vertical, citing the ample evidence from other states that such operations can be perfectly legal and safe.
Gov. Abbott did not defend sports betting per se, but rather acquiesced that he would not intervene should the legislature hammer out the details and introduce online sports wagering, which he suspects would happen at some point anyway.
Sports Betting Alliance president Jeremy Kudon has welcomed Gov. Abbott’s readiness to sign draft sports betting legislation into law, arguing that it represented a tremendous opportunity for the state to finally push through important changes and capitalize on a vibrant local market.
According to GeoComply, which recently analyzed data from the state, Texans are already looking at how to gamble in the state, with what could be as many as 75% supporting the legalizing of sports gambling in the first place.
Local support has been pronounced with major sports franchises such as the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Astros, the San Antonio Spurs and others joining in the choir of vocal supporters for sports gambling legalization.
Texas Pushes Harder for Sports Betting and Destination Casinos
Tilman Fertitta, another state-based entrepreneur, who owns the Houston Rockets and the Golden Nugget Las Vegas has long advocated for a break with the strait-laced past which has restricted gambling.
Fertitta has pushed for both sports betting legalization and also the introduction of destination resorts in the Lone Star State. A recent ad campaign saw Texans bombarded with beguiling imagery of what the state’s future may look like should lawmakers allow residents to vote on whether destination resorts ought to be allowed.
