Men’s Road Cycling 2024 Olympics Odds, Time, and Prediction

This is going to be the 22^nd appearance of the Men’s Cycling Road Race event and one of the most exciting cycling events in the history of the Games. It’s because the one-day race at Pont d’Iena in Paris will see some real superstars competing for the gold medal. This includes Mathieu van der Poel, Mads Pedersen, Remco Evenepoel, Wout Van Aert, and others.

The race for Olympic Gold is a one-day event with a course that is 273 kilometers long (roughly 170 miles) with 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) of climbing. This makes it somewhat similar to Monument races like Paris-Roubaix or Tour of Flanders.

Mathieu van der Poel Loves These Sorts of Races

Mathieu van der Poel is one of the greatest riders of his generation. Even though he’s yet to win a Grand Tour race, the 29-year-old Dutchman has a fantastic portfolio.

His specialty is one-day races like Paris-Roubaix, which he won the last three times. He’s also won the Tour of Flanders a.k.a. De Ronde multiple times, most recently in March this year.  

Bookies are aware of this, which is why they’re giving Olympic cycling odds of +150 for van der Poel winning Gold. This makes him the No. 1 favorite.

However, even though he likes these sorts of events, he’s not going to have an easy job as a few other one-day race specialists are coming to Paris as well.

Other Cyclists Who Could Win Gold in Paris

Mads Pedersen (+550), Remco Evenepoel (+700), and Wout van Aert (+750) are the only other cyclists with Olympic odds in the form of a three-figure number. What this practically means is that bookies consider these three to be van der Poel’s main threats for the gold medal.

This is no surprise given that all of them are great in one-day racing events. Mads Pedersen has never won a Monument, but he’s got four wins at Classics in his portfolio, the most recent of which happened this Spring. The race in question is Gent–Wevelgem, which saw him finish before van der Poel.

Remco Evenepoel is another potential candidate for Gold. He’s the man who won La Vuelta two years ago, as well as many one-day races. More recently, he took part in the 2024 Tour de France, where he finished third. It’s a great achievement but it happened only a month ago, so there’s a possibility that he hasn’t had enough time to prepare properly for the Olympics. This is actually why the yellow jersey winner Tadej Pogacar decided to skip the Games in Paris.

Another cyclist who took part in the French Grand Tour race is Wout van Aert. It was his first race after months of hiatus due to an injury, so it’s not surprising that he finished in 56^th place. Will he do better at the Olympics? Probably, but we don’t think he’ll win Gold. So, who will? Let’s find out!
