Qatar Playing on Home Turf for Its Second Asian Title

Qatar is the defending AFC Asian Cup champion who won the trophy in 2019 after beating Japan 3-1 in the Final. Most of the players from the title-winning generation are still on the roster, including the three players who scored in the previous Final – Almoez Ali, Abdulaziz Hatem, and Akram Afif.

These guys did not impress at the World Cup last year, which was held in Qatar. Fast-forward to February 2024, and they’re playing on their turf again. This time, it’s the AFC Asian Cup, and this time, the hosts look great.

They’ve been great since the start of the tournament, with their performance against favored Iran in the semifinal being arguably their best so far. Even though they conceded an early goal, they were able to turn things around and get a 2-1 lead at halftime. Iran equalizer from the penalty spot shortly after the start of the second 45 minutes, but Almoez Ali scored the winner in the 82^nd minute.
