IBJR Highlights Key Pledges in Newly Released Manifesto
The manifesto points to key fronts supported by the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming with the goal of establishing a safe and responsible gambling sector
Ahead of the much-anticipated launch of legal sports betting in Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) released its manifesto, outlining its goal to contribute to the development of secure, transparent a healthy gambling environment.
Brazil Prepares for the Launch of Legal Betting
Legal online betting will come to Brazil on January 1, 2025. This is when the country will officially roll out its regulations for online betting, paving the way for the legal expansion of the activity in a country that stands out with some of the most avid sports fans.
Importantly, a comprehensive set of rules will safeguard consumers from excessive gambling and harm while also protecting and preventing the access of underage individuals to betting across the country. Brazil plans to implement facial recognition as an essential tool to combat underage gambling.
Additionally, betting limits, such as deposit, time and spending limits will help consumers restrict their financial losses. Further measures highlighted as incredibly important by the IBJR include the prohibition of the use of credit cards for gambling.
IBJR’s Manifesto Focuses on Key Areas
Ahead of the launch of legal betting, IBJR pointed to its ongoing goal to combat unlawful gambling. Collaborating with match-fixing monitoring bodies such as the IBIA, the International Betting Integrity Association, the Institute promotes responsible play through legal platforms. “After all, from advertising to tax collection, including sports sponsorship and support for responsible gambling, the betting industry in Brazil must be clean. That is what we stand for – without compromise,” explained IBJR.
IBJR’s manifesto, titled “To play, there must be rules,” points to its dedication and commitment on several fronts, including regulation, contribution to the economy and sports, conscious advertising and responsible gaming. Acknowledging planned responsible gambling limits and facial recognition, IBJR said that such technological solutions can “combat addictive behavior and prevent minors from placing online bets.”
The manifesto outlines the contribution of gambling to the country’s economy and sports vertical. Considering the high number of operators interested in the market, IBJR estimated that taxes are expected to reach billions of reais, helping different sports to thrive while benefitting other sectors as well.
Importantly, IBJR’s manifesto also supported the regulation of advertising, ensuring that betting ads do not breach the “legal norms.” The manifesto explains: “We have already adopted clear parameters and launched an Advertising Code that guides the campaigns of companies associated with IBJR, in addition to always disseminating educational messages.”
Another important part of the manifesto focuses on regulation. The Institute of Responsible Gaming pointed out the benefits of applying strict rules to the sector, following best practices from markets across the globe.
To help licensed betting brands stand out, their internet domains will be given a new ending: .bet.br. This ending will help distinguish the betting brands with licenses from the offshore or illegal operators.
