Oliveira’s Grappling Mastery Gives Him the Edge
Charles Oliveira (34-10-1) is widely recognized as one of the best grapplers in UFC history. Currently holding the record for the most submission wins in UFC history, with 16, he’s likely aiming to push that to 17 if he manages to take Chandler down to the mat.
Their previous clash saw Oliveira overpower Chandler with a TKO, but this time, “Do Bronx” might decide to go back to his roots, opting for a submission.
Winning this fight would get him back onto the winning track, after losing to Arman Tsarukyan by a split decision last April. In that fight, he tried to submit his Armenian opponent four times but failed to do so.
Despite that loss, he’s still flying high in the UFC Lightweight Rankings, currently sitting in second place. Beating the No.7 lightweight in the UFC could get him back in the conversation for the title.
Chandler’s Struggles Against Top Contenders
Michael Chandler’s MMA career speaks for itself, with an impressive overall record of 23-8. However, his UFC record tells a different story, sitting at just 2-3, with one of those losses coming from Oliveira.
Chandler’s last fight was in 2022 when he lost to Dustin Poirier via submission. He doesn’t seem to have any ring rust, though. Based on footage he shared on social media, the 38-year-old is in top shape and ready to go to war for the full five rounds on November 16.
However, his incredible athleticism and warrior heart might not be enough against Oliveira. Given the Brazilian’s ability to lock in submissions under pressure, Chandler might be in trouble if the fight goes to the ground.
Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler 2 Prediction
Our prediction is that Charles Oliveira will extend his submission record to 17 wins at UFC 309. Chandler may have the drive and determination, but Oliveira’s grappling and experience with big fights should give him an advantage.
Pick: Charles Oliveira
