Billionaire Submits Bid to Buy Vancouver Whitecaps, Plan Vegas Relocation

Key Points
  • A bid for the Vancouver Whitecaps would relocate the team to Las Vegas
  • The current owners prefer to keep the team in Vancouver, but no buyer wishing to keep it there has appeared yet
  • If the club moves, that would cement Las Vegas as a major sports hub

The Vancouver Whitecaps, a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, could move to Sin City after a billionaire-led investor group filed a bid to purchase the team. If this goes through, it would further cement Las Vegas as a burgeoning sports hub.

The Whitecaps Could Move to Sin City

Billionaire Grant Gustavson has stepped forward to acquire the Vancouver Whitecaps for an undisclosed sum. The proposal is being funded privately, and the details of a potential arrangement will not be disclosed.

However, a spokesperson for Gustavson and the investor group confirmed that the arrangement’s ultimate objective would end with the team getting relocated to Las Vegas. Despite that, the spokesperson emphasized that this plan is not associated with the ongoing efforts to introduce new sports arenas to the city.

In any case, the move could make sense, considering that Vancouver Whitecaps leaders recently talked about the challenges in keeping the team in Vancouver. Similar concerns were also echoed by Don Garber, the CEO of the MLS. As a result, the team has been for sale since 2024.

Remaining in Vancouver Might Be Impossible

For context, the Vancouver Whitecaps are currently co-owned by Greg Kerfoot, Stephen Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and Steve Nash. The club is currently leasing BC Place, which, unfortunately, is not a soccer-only stadium. As a result, operating there comes with a variety of setbacks, including inflexible schedules and limited revenue opportunities.

At the same time, the team has been doing very well, coming in second place in the MLS Westen Conference this season. As a result, the MLS is now reviewing various options for the team.

Both fans and the current owners have expressed a strong desire to keep the Vancouver Whitecaps in Vancouver and maintain the team’s original spirit. The efforts included a “Save the Caps” campaign seeking to raise awareness of the cause.

However, no buyer wishing to keep the team there has appeared so far. In a recent statement, a Whitecaps spokesperson said that there have been over 100 potential buyers expressing interest in acquiring the team, none of which actually wanted to keep it in Vancouver.

In the meantime, Las Vegas is steadily becoming a major sports hub, which is reinforced by the plan to add a local NBA franchise. If the Whitecaps move there, that would further reinforce the local sports sector.
