UK MP Calls for Stricter Loot Box Rules to Safeguard Kids

The blurring lines between gambling and gaming continue to raise concerns about the impact of such content on children, which is why one MP called for additional restrictions

The ease of access to online games thanks to smartphones and the growing popularity of loot boxes, part of such games, played by children, continue to raise concerns.

While the long-term impact of gambling-like content on children is still being analyzed, research already shows that the blurring line between gambling and gaming may have dire consequences.

Amid changes to the gambling sector in the UK, one local MP called for additional measures to protect children and young adults from the harmful effects of gambling-like content part of video games.

Further Action Is Needed to Protect Children from Gambling-like Content in Games

Local MP Alex Mayer, who was recently interviewed by the Leighton Buzzard Observer, spoke about the importance of the recently introduced legally mandated levy on gambling companies that seeks to help fund problem gambling treatment and research. “We now need further action to protect children from the harmful effects of gambling-like content in video games and relentless advertising,” the MP added.

Mayer spoke about the growing popularity of gambling-like content, which has become a part of the daily lives of children across the country. She warned that the popular loot boxes may have a significant impact, especially on children, who may not realize the dangers of gambling behavior. Encouraging such gambling-like behavior may ultimately lead to addiction later in life, the MP warned.

Gambling Ads Online Need Stricter Regulation, MP Says

Many games aimed at children currently offer loot boxes, loot crates or other mechanics that mimic gambling-like activities. This is because the player is often presented with a choice to spin a reel, open a card or unlock a create that awards a random prize.

The awarded item can have real-money value and in some cases can be “sold” or “traded” via different platforms. However, similar to gambling activities like slots for example where top prizes are difficult to get, loot boxes also rarely award high-value game items. This pushes many children into wanting to open more loot boxes, an activity that often requires the purchase of a token or a key with real money.

Mayer urged for stricter controls when it comes to gambling advertisements which may be seen by children online. The MP also added: “I have called on the Government to ensure dedicated resources for research, education, and treatment focused on young people.”

Loot boxes are in the sights of lawmakers across Europe. Only recently, the developer of League of Legends, Riot Games, was hit with a lawsuit in Belgium over the use of loot boxes. The plaintiffs argued that the mechanic which involved paid loot boxes is in violation of the country’s regulation on gaming products.

Focusing once again on the UK, there’s an ongoing change in the gambling sector in the country. Earlier this month, the Gambling Commission announced changes to deposit limits. Ultimately, this move seeks to protect consumers from spending more than they can afford and protect them from gambling harm and addiction.
