PA Man Who Assaulted Casino Winner, Shot by Victim’s Son

A would-be robber from Pennsylvania who followed a woman who had recently visited a casino was shot by her son and is facing multiple charges

A Pennsylvania man who allegedly followed a woman to her home in an attempt to rob her of the money she was carrying after a recent casino visit has reached the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on a $250,000 bail.

Robbery Attempt Stopped by Victim’s Son

However, Khabir Shepard’s route into police custody did not follow a straight line. The man’s alleged robbery attempt went awry early Monday morning.

After he reportedly followed the unnamed woman to her home in Abington Township, at about 1 am, the suspect made use of a firearm to force his way into her residence.

According to law enforcement, the man specifically targeted his victim, knowing she had left the casino with money in her purse.

There, he proceeded to push her to the ground and take the handbag that she had placed on a nearby table.

The armed perpetrator was, however, confronted by the victim’s son who was asleep “in a rear bedroom” and was woken up because of the uproar and his mother’s cries for help.

“The victim screamed for help from her adult son,” the police’s statement said.

The woman’s son shot the intruder twice with a legally owned firearm after he noticed he was armed.

The Injured Man Tried to Flee the Scene

Despite his back and arm injuries, Shepard attempted to flee the scene. However, he could only reach as far as the front garden before he collapsed because of his gunshot wounds.

Soon after, the victims alerted the Abington Township Police Department whose officers arrived at the victims’ Horace Avenue residence.

The suspect was placed into police custody before he was taken to a hospital nearby.

There, he received the necessary treatment for his wounds and was released and arrested on Wednesday for several charges.

The list includes robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and carrying a firearm without a license.

According to the police, the suspect’s handgun used in the crime was retrieved at the scene. Thankfully, neither the woman nor her son sustained injuries during the violent encounter.

For the time being, it is not certain how much money the suspect managed to steal from the woman’s purse, or whether he targeted her while she was still inside the casino or waited until she exited the premises.

Police have also not disclosed the name of the casino. The area is home to several gaming properties.

Shepard has yet to enter a plea regarding the charges against him.

If convicted, he faces significant prison time due to the severity of the allegations.

The local community in Abington Township, about 16 miles north of Philadelphia, remains on edge, as this incident has underscored the potential dangers that can arise even in seemingly quiet residential areas.

At the end of July, 12 land-based casinos in the state filed a petition to the Supreme Court, asking for a ruling to tax skill games the same way as slots or declare the taxation unconstitutional.
