No Mass Deportations Expected For LV Hotel, Casino Employees

A new report highlighted the importance of the hospitality and gaming industries for Nevada's economy

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump addressed a number of issues, vowing to bring many changes once he assumes office. After his win in November, it was only a matter of time for this to happen.

Last month, Trump assumed office and immediately started signing a range of executive orders in what appears to be a fast-track effort to implement his agenda. Besides greenlighting a policy that recognizes only two sexes, male and female, the President vowed to crack down on undocumented residents.

President’s Deportation Plans Raise Concerns

The potential deportations of undocumented immigrants across the country resulted in concerns among some. Only recently, people gathered to protest near the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, speaking out against the President’s immigration plans. The protest last month attracted some 200 people.

Now, a newly released report highlights the importance of the gambling and hospitality industry in Las Vegas and Nevada, predicting that the sectors are unlikely to be impacted by mass deportations. As announced by KSNV, the two aforementioned sectors are of great importance to Nevada.

The publication discussed the matter with the Culinary Union’s leader, Ted Pappageorge, who pointed to the strict regulations currently enforced by the industry. Overall, the Union represents some 60,000 workers across the state. “In our industry on the Las Vegas Strip, it’s not an issue. Well, it’s heavily regulated. Most industries are not regulated like gaming,” Pappageorge explained.

The Gaming and Hospitality Industries Are Significantly Important for Nevada

The Culinary Union’s executive spoke about the complex position of the gambling sector that is monitored by the Nevada Gaming Commission and the Nevada Gaming Control Board. He predicted that this scrutiny is unlikely to change in the future.

Currently, there are strict rules when it comes to employment within the gambling sector across the state. Employees who want to work at a hotel that offers gambling activities in Nevada must provide proof of their legal status in the country. Eligible immigrants can provide Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or Temporary Protected Status documents. On the other hand, citizens can verify their residence by providing permanent residency or a social security card.

Data from the Nevada Resort Association highlights the importance of the gambling and hospitality industries for Nevada’s economy. Approximately 27% of the total jobs across the state or 386,000 direct and indirect jobs are supported by the gaming sector across the state. Focusing on the financial impact of the sector, casinos in Nevada deliver more than $21 billion in salaries.

In other related news, police in Las Vegas recently apprehended three people suspected of being involved in a brazen wire theft. The unlawful actions caused a power outage last week, affecting 14,000 residents.
