Turkey’s Defensive Power

Turkey advanced to the quarterfinals with a hard-fought victory over Austria, thanks to two crucial goals from Merih Demiral. He scored both of them with his head after a corner kick.

After taking the lead, Turkey switched their strategy to defense at all costs. The result was that Austria created almost four times as many goal attempts as they did. Nevertheless, the Turks got what they wanted, winning the game 2:1 and demonstrating how good they are tactically.

Demiral was the man of the match, while their goalkeeper Mert Gunok saved the day for Turkey on a couple of occasions, most notably in the final moments of the game when he saved Felix Baumgartner’s header, which looked destined to get in.

Now, Turkey has an even harder job on their hands when they battle the Dutch for a spot in the semifinal. However, there’s one good news ahead of that clash – their captain Hakan Calhanoglu is coming back.

He missed the Austria game due to a suspension, which is perhaps why his team struggled to establish possession. With him on the field, Vincenzo Montella’s men are likely to do better in the midfield.

Reasons Why the Dutch are Favored to Win

The Netherlands, have one of the best defenses in the tournament, marshaled by Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij. This solid backline has been crucial in their progress to the quarterfinal of the Euros, the evidence being that they kept a clean sheet in two games of the tournament so far. One of those was in the game with Romania in the round of 16, in which we saw the Dutch score three goals.

Offensively, the Dutch have shown signs of improvement in that game, with Cody Gakpo scoring one goal and Donyell Malen getting on target twice. The midfield, featuring Xavi Simons and Tijjani Reijnders, has been instrumental in creating chances for the forwards.

On top of everything, the Dutch also have a fantastic manager in Ronald Koeman, who was a part of the Euro-winning generation as a player.

Netherlands vs. Turkey Prediction

The odds favor the Netherlands, but Turkey’s defensive prowess cannot be underestimated. This is going to be a real thriller, at the end of which we’ll probably see the Dutch triumph. It’s just that they do have more talent in their quad than the Turks.
