Merkur Gaming Sets Sights on Former Sex Shop Site
Merkur Gaming has proposed a rezoning of the vacant space that would allow it to operate a 24/7 cashino at the site

Merkur Gaming, a slot machine manufacturer and gaming hall operator, is eyeing opportunities to open a new cashino on the site of a former sex shop. Located on Northampton’s Abington Street, the location became available after the shop in question relocated last year.
The high street site was the home of an Ann Summers shop, which, as mentioned, specializes in lingerie and sex toys. Originally founded in 1971, the UK retailer now operates approximately 80 shops across the country. However, the Abington Street shop shut down in June 2023 and was relocated to the second floor of the Grosvenor Shopping Center.
Merkur Gaming has since proposed a rezoning of the vacant space that would allow it to operate a 24/7 cashino at the site. The company, which currently operates over 220 such venues, is famous for its slot halls.
Merkur currently operates a Cashino property near the former Ann Summers shop. Acquiring two adjacent retail businesses would allow the gambling brand to significantly expand its hall. This expansion would come in the wake of the pandemic, which allowed multiple gambling operators to acquire new properties and scale their businesses.
Merkur, for example, is planning to invest millions of pounds in expanding its high street presence in 2024 alone.
Merkur Wants to Revitalize the High Street
A Merkur spokesperson explained that the change of use would revitalize the Northampton high street, bringing more life to the town center. According to them, the proposal would bring back a longstanding vacant unit into commercial use, unlocking significant economic benefits for the town.
As an established operator brand, Merkur is convinced that its new hall would be able to contribute significantly to the center.
However, not everyone is on board. Labor councilor Danielle Stone expressed her disappointment about Merkur’s proposal and said that she believes the town needs more “ethical investors.” According to her, Northampton already has enough casinos, which are already harming vulnerable people in the area.
For context, the town boasts a variety of shops where customers can play slots or wager on sports.
In any case, Merkur’s requests will likely be considered during the West Northamptonshire Council meeting on June 24.
