Malaysian Police Cut Power to 470 Online Gambling Premises in Johor

Police in Malaysia have shut down electricity to 470 illegal gambling premises in Johor since last year in an effort to stop illegal operations.

Malaysian authorities are intensifying efforts to combat illegal online casinos and have cut power to 470 premises across the city of Johor Bahru since January 2024. The latest operation, conducted in late February, saw 86 illegal gambling sites have their electricity disconnected. In addition, authorities revoked eight business licenses as part of the operation.

The aim of the operation, which is led by Johor police, local councils, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), is to dismantle unlicensed gambling operations and stop their re-emergence. Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar explained that the latest actions demonstrate the authorities’ continued dedication to eliminating gambling crimes for the benefit of the community.

The enforcement team consisted of 64 senior and junior police officers, 48 TNB personnel, and seven local government officials. Authorities carried out the shutdowns under Section 21A of the Open House Gambling Act 1953, which provides legal authority to close illegal gambling premises.

Additionally, authorities confiscated equipment from seven locations in Muar and one in Tangkak, while the licenses of eight premises were revoked during the operation. Kumar also explained that gambling syndicates use digital platforms to lure players and collect payments.

While horse racing and lottery gambling are legal in Malaysia, strict bans are in place against sports betting and online gambling. After the recent operation, the police have requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block access to the illicit websites that were targeted.

Malaysian Police Adopt Zero Tolerance Policy

The operation is part of Malaysian authorities’ efforts to stamp out illegal gambling. Kumar warned landlords to ensure their tenants are not using properties for gambling activities. He emphasized that owners must take responsibility. If premises are found to be involved in illegal gambling, authorities will take action.

In addition to cutting power and confiscating equipment, Johor police have also urged the public to report any suspected gambling activities. The police emphasized that community participation is vital in eradicating illegal gambling in the country.

Kumar explained that the authorities would not tolerate any form of online gambling and would conduct further operations to prevent its continued spread. He further stated that the police have never compromised when it comes to addressing gambling-related offenses. According to him, the police regularly monitor and inspect premises suspected of involvement in gambling, and that these operations will persist.
