Interpol’s Red Notice Goes After Fugitive Tycoon in the Philippines

Gambling tycoon Charlie "Atong" Ang is alleged to have played a role in the disappearance of at least 34 individuals linked to the nation’s cockfighting sector

After Interpol issued a red notice against gambling businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, authorities have stepped up their efforts to find him. This is part of a larger international effort to get him arrested.

Philippine Fugitive Atong Ang Targeted by Global Police

Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed the alert, which asks police around the world to keep an eye on Ang and possibly arrest him until he can be extradited. The Philippine National Police asked for this action after courts issued several warrants for serious criminal charges, reported Philippine media outlet Inquirer.net.

Ang is accused of being involved in the disappearances of at least 34 people who were connected to the country’s cockfighting industry. The missing men, who are often called sabungeros, went missing in several provinces between 2021 and 2022. Charges against the suspects include kidnapping, murder, and illegal detention.

This makes the case one of the most well-known unsolved cases in the Philippines.
Even though they have stepped up their efforts, authorities have had a hard time catching the businessman.

Officials said that Ang was seen in the Calabarzon area about two weeks ago. However, police units could not catch him because they got there too late, after he had already left the area. Investigators think he has been moving around a lot, only with a small group of people, to avoid being caught.

Law enforcement agencies had thought that Ang might try to escape through unofficial routes, which is why they asked for international help so early. At first, people thought he might have left the country, but now officials think he is still in the Philippines

Families Demand Answers as Search for Ang Widens

The red notice is not an international arrest warrant, but it is an important way to inform authorities around the world. If Ang tries to cross borders or find safety in another country, this makes it much more likely that he will be caught.

Because of the size of the case and the scary claims behind the disappearances, it has gotten a lot of attention. Some testimonies suggest that the victims may have been targeted because people thought they were rigging cockfighting results. This claim is still being looked into. Separate statements from a whistleblower have also claimed that other people, including law enforcement officers, may have been involved, but these claims have not yet been fully proven.

Ang has always said he did not do anything wrong, and his lawyers say the accusations are false. Still, the Interpol notice marks a turning point because it broadens the search to other countries.

As the manhunt goes on, families are putting more and more pressure on the police to find answers. The investigation is still focused on what happened to the missing men, and officials have promised to follow up on all leads until the people responsible are caught.
