Illinois Gaming Board Implements New Advertising Regulations
IGB Administrator Marcus D. Fruchter emphasized that the revised rules establish uniform advertising guidelines for all types of gambling that the board regulates
The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) put new advertising and marketing rules into action for sports betting, casino games, and video gaming at its September 12, 2024 meeting. These fresh guidelines are part of the IGB’s ongoing work to promote responsible gambling and to keep a closer eye on gaming growth across the state.
IGB’s Updated Rules Set Consistent Advertising Standards Across All Gambling Types
IGB Administrator Marcus D. Fruchter highlighted that the updated rules bring in consistent advertising guidelines for all gambling types the board oversees. These rules, which used to center on sports betting, will now cover casinos and video gaming terminals (VGTs) as well. This marks a first for the state. The new measures aim to provide extra protection for consumers and bring Illinois’ gaming rules in line with those of other states. Ohio and Massachusetts, for example, are known to have tough rules in place.
A crucial part of the new rules puts limits on the words gambling ads can use. Words like “free” or “risk-free” cannot be used in marketing materials anymore. This aims to protect people who might be swayed, including kids and those who could become addicted to gambling. Also, the rules stop sports betting ads from showing up on college grounds or in student magazines, which helps keep young adults safe from possible gambling problems.
The board also made new rules for casinos. They now have to keep thorough records of all their ads and marketing plans. Famous people cannot be used in casino ads as much now, which brings this market segment in line with the rules already in place for sports betting. These steps are part of a bigger plan to get ready for possible growth in online gambling in the state.
IGB Names September Responsible Gambling Education Month
Along with these rule changes, the IGB has named September National Responsible Gambling Education Month. This month, the board aims to spread the word about gambling addiction and where people can get help if they need it. Fruchter stressed that the board plans to work with gambling companies, government groups, and addiction experts to encourage safe gambling habits and make sure help is easy to find.
Besides tackling advertising rules, the IGB made other regulatory decisions during the meeting. The board gave Rivers Casino a new four-year casino license. This gambling property brings in the most money in Illinois. It reported over $346 million in winnings from January to August 2024 adding a lot to state and local taxes. Also, Hawthorne Race Course got its master sports betting license renewed. It is still working with Fanatics for in-person and mobile sports betting.
The IGB plans to meet again on October 24, 2024, for its next regular meeting. People expect more rule changes.
