Wynn Resorts Under Fire Due to Recent Data Breach
Two more such lawsuits have been filed, accusing the operator of insufficient protection of player data
Gaming giant Wynn Resorts recently suffered a severe cyberattack, leading to the loss of 800,000 internal records. As a result, the company is now facing lawsuits from customers who believe that its efforts to protect their personal information were insufficient.
Sensitive Employee Data Was Compromised
As mentioned, Wynn Resorts just suffered a serious cyberattack, compromising thousands of employee records. The attack was attributed to ransomware group ShinyHunters, who are said to have demanded a ransom in return for the files.
Wynn acknowledged the attack but refused to comment on the matter further, declining to confirm whether it plans to pay the ransom or not.
While earlier announcements clearly stated that the leaked data was related to Wynn’s employees, consumers nevertheless expressed concerns about their own data, leading to class action lawsuits against the gaming business.
A Total of Three Lawsuits Have Been Filed So Far
Earlier this week, a class action lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for Nevada, alleging that Wynn failed to properly encrypt its customers’ information and shield it from potential data breaches.
Now, two more such lawsuits have been filed, accusing the operator of similar negligence. The first class action was filed the day after the attack, with the other two following suit soon after.
The latest lawsuits were filed by Stranch, Jennings & Garvey, which asserted that Wynn committed several violations, including negligence, negligence per se, unjust enrichment, invasion of privacy, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of implied contract.
Stranch, Jennings & Garvey emphasized that Wynn possessed the financial means to implement reasonable safeguards, but failed to do so, causing the exposure of sensitive private information.
The law firm is now seeking a declaratory judgment.
