Spelinspektionen to Study the Black Market

The Spelinspektionen emphasized that black market operators pose a danger to Swedish consumers, take a toll on public health and undermine tax revenue

The Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, continues its fight to protect Swedish consumers from the harm caused by black market operators. To that end, the authority will now compile a new “situational study” of the situation that will help it in the future war on illegal gambling.

The Regulator Aims to Protect the Public

In its release, the Spelinspektionen emphasized that black market operators pose a danger to Swedish consumers, take a toll on public health and undermine tax revenue. Because of that, the country is bullish on making sure that real-money games only take place within the Swedish licensing system.

The new situational study will take a look into the overall illegal gambling market and will gauge the severity of the issue. It will come in addition to the Spelinspektionen’s ongoing supervisory work and will, among other things, identify the key players in the black market and identify the methods they use to circumvent the Swedish laws.

Sweden Seeks Ways to Counter the Black Market

The study will provide the gambling authority with new ideas for parrying the illegal gambling market’s efforts to violate Sweden’s gambling rules. According to the Spelinspektionen’s director general, Camilla Rosenberg, it will also provide other players and regulatory bodies in the gaming market with new ideas on combating illegal gambling.

According to the Spelinspektionen, the new analysis will:

  • Describe the current gambling black market situation in Sweden
  • Identify key violators and their methods of circumventing the rules
  • Draw comparisons with other regulated markets
  • Devise new strategies to further inhibit the influence of illegal gambling operators
  • Make suggestions for possible legislative changes

The Spelinspektionen said that its situational study should be completed in January 2025.

Swedish Lottery Was Accused of Targeting the Elderly; BOS Demands Private Casinos

In other news, Sweden Social Democrats’ subscription-based lottery, Kombispel, was just accused of “pressuring senior citizens” into buying tickets. According to the allegations, Kombispel had onboarded an agency from Barcelona to aggressively market tickets to the elderly.

In other news, BOS, Sweden’s Trade Association for Online Gambling, recently asked the government to greenlight private casinos if it decides to proceed with the closure of the last Casino Cosmopol property.

Casino Cosmopol, the country’s land-based monopoly, is considering putting an end to its retail business, which would effectively leave Sweden without a casino. BOS agreed that governments should not be running casinos but advised lawmakers not to let the land-based industry disappear completely.
