Romania on the Verge of Achieving Huge Success

Qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Euros 24 years ago remains the biggest success of the Romanian soccer team. They’ve got a chance to do it again, but for that, they need to knock the Netherlands out of the competition.

The big question is whether they can actually pull it off. Romania did look good against Ukraine in the first round, winning the game 3:0. However, the game result had more to do with how poor some of the Ukrainian players were. Then, in the second round, Romania lost 2:0 to Belgium before drawing 1:1 with Slovakia.

There’s So Much at Stake for the Dutch

If they don’t go past Romania, it’ll be seen as a huge disappointment for the Dutch, and coach Ronald Koeman will probably be forced to resign. It’s just that his team is way more talented than Romania, so it would be embarrassing to struggle in the round of 16.

Another reason to take this game seriously is that the Dutch have a relatively easy path to the final, or at least the semifinal. They’re on the easier side of the bracket, where the highest-ranked team is England, with which they can meet in the semifinal.

If they beat Romania, they will go to the quarterfinal to play against the winner of the Austria vs. Turkey game.

So, if the Dutch play as well as a team with such amazing players should, they should get at least to the semis. So, will they play well?

Romania vs. Netherlands Prediction

Romania only has one player who plays as a regular with 20+ games per season in one of the Big Five European leagues. It’s Razvan Marin who played 30 games for Empoli last season, which is the team that finished in 17th place (out of 20) in the Italian Serie A.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands squad has 19 players who play in the Big Five, as well as six players currently employed at clubs from the Dutch Eredivisie, which many think of as the 6th best soccer league in Europe.

Knowing all this, it would be really embarrassing for the Dutch if they got knocked out of the Euros by Romania.

Pick: Netherlands
