NJ’s Gambling Sector Records September Surge from iGaming, Betting
While the revenue from online gambling and sports betting contributed to the overall total, the lion's share came from casino gambling
September marked a strong month for licensed gambling operators in New Jersey.
Gaming Revenue Increases in September
On Thursday, the state’s gambling regulator, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), released its latest report, pointing to a strong growth in revenue in September. In total, casinos, racetracks and their partners reported revenue of $558.3 million last month. This result, pointed to a 7.1% increase year-over-year when compared to the $521.5 million figure reported in September 2023.
The revenue increased on a year-to-date basis as well, hitting $4.72 billion. Compared to the $4.29 billion result for the corresponding period last year, in 2024, an increase of 10.1% is observed.
Notably, the growth in the total revenue reported during September comes after exceptional results from online gambling activities, along with solid contributions from sports betting and casino revenue.
All Forms of Gambling Record Increase in Revenue
A breakdown provided by the DGE reveals that internet gaming win last month soared to $208.1 million. This result, compared to the $163.8 million posted in September last year showed a solid increase of 27.1%.
Not unexpectedly, year-to-date internet gaming win also marked an uptick. Through the end of September, internet gaming win hit $1.73 billion, a result that represents a whopping 23.2% year-over-year increase.
In addition to the growth of online gambling revenue, sports betting revenue increased year-over-year in September too. In total, last month, casinos, racetracks and their partners reported $119.6 million in sports betting gross revenue, up by 7.6% year-over-year.
The smallest increase in revenue last month was reported by the land-based casino sector. Although casino win marked the smallest increase year-over-year, it was responsible for more than 50% of the revenue. In total, casino win hit $230.6 million last month, a result that reflected a 6.5% year-over-year increase.
Several Casino Licensees Reported Revenue Decrease
Although the recent results mark a year-over-year increase, they are not directly comparable to 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, compared to September 2022 when the total reported revenue halted at $485 million, a notable increase is observed.
In contrast, the revenue in September didn’t increase for all casino licensees and racetracks in New Jersey. Out of 13 operators in total, five reported a decrease in their total revenue this September when compared to September last year.
Recently, a dealer and player received sentences due to a cheating scheme they conducted at Encore Boston Harbor Casino. Although the two men were sentenced earlier this month, the criminal case dates back to 2019. In total, the losses for the casino operator were estimated at $15,000.
