Reasons Why Qinwen Zheng Is the Betting Favorite
If Qinwen Zheng wins the gold medal, it’s going to be the greatest success of her career. The 21-year-old Chinese player has already won 13 tournaments, but none of those was a major one. In fact, probably the biggest event she’s won so far is the WTA Zhengzhou last year. She also won the women’s tennis tournament at the Asian Games a year earlier.

What’s interesting is that both of those were played on the hardcourt. However, clay seems to be her favorite type of ground. She’s got six titles won in tournaments played on clay, not to mention that her overall record on this surface is 80-21.
Five of those wins happened at the 2024 Olympics, including the one against Iga Swiatek. Zheng won the match 2-0 with 6-2 in the first set and 7-5 in the second. She did okay, but it’s her opponent who wasn’t at the top of her game. In the gold medal match, however, Zheng will be faced against super-motivated Donna Vekic.
Can Donna Vekic Upset the Odds?
Donna Vekic is a 28-year-old Croatian who’s been playing tennis professionally since 2011. She’s got plenty of experience, but she hasn’t won too many trophies in her 13+ years-long career. In fact, she’s only won seven tournaments so far, none of which were played on clay.
Her record on this surface is 52-50, suggesting that she’s not too much of an expert when it comes to playing on clay courts. However, she’s been pretty impressive since coming to France this summer.
At the 2024 Olympics, we saw her drop just one set. It happened against Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinal. In the match before that, she beat Coco Gauff in straight sets despite being a +370 underdog.
Qinwen Zheng vs. Donna Vekic Prediction
Qinwen Zheng is a better player than Donna Vekic. The only advantage the Croatian player has over her is experience. She’s been a pro for much longer than the Chinese athlete. Still, the fact is that she’s never featured in such a big match as the Olympic Final. This is why we don’t expect her to pull off a major surprise. She will give Zheng a real war, but we predict she’s going to lose it.
Pick: Qunwen Zheng
