Netflix Reveals New Crime Drama by “Squid Game” Creator

A new casino-themed TV series on Netflix has been announced by “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.

“Squid Game” is the streaming platform’s most successful show to date. The upcoming TV series is titled “The Dealer,” and it has just been greenlit, with the main cast of the upcoming South Korean crime drama also having been revealed.

Firstman Studio is the production company that’s working on “The Dealer”; the company was co-founded by Hwang and worked on the “Squid Game” series that made him famous.

Plot of the Series

The show’s official synopsis presents the story of the gifted casino dealer Geonhwa. Geonhwa is one of the dealers at “Oceanland,” a chaotic, newly opened casino.

Her life is thrown into shambles as a housing scam takes all of Geonhwa’s money and ruins her long-awaited wedding. This leaves her with no choice but to return to a life she had chosen to leave.

Aiming to get her life back in order, Geonhwa re-enters the shadowy world of illegal gambling. She joins a high-stakes Texas Hold’em tournament where to get an edge at the tables and win she has to release long-suppressed supernatural abilities.

In an odd twist, Geonhwa can detect lies if she… has imbibed enough alcohol.

The Principal Cast for “The Dealer”

The list of the show’s cast includes several notable names. Geonhwa, the series main character, will be played by Jung So-min, who has starred in some of the more famous shows she has played, such as “Love Reset” and “Alchemy of Souls”.

Ryoo Seung-bum portrays a gambler who gets by on whatever he earns by gambling and ends up joining Geonhwa’s scheme.

Kyung-soo has been cast as a detective and Geonhwa’s fiance named Choi Wooseung. Actor Soo-Hyuk is in the role of the casino player who turns tables, Jo Jun.

This series will also mark cinematographer Choi Young-hwan’s first directional debut. Choi has been the cinematographer of many famous South Korean films such as “Smugglers”, “The Thieves”, and “Veteran”. 

The show’s writers are Ohnooy and Lee Tae-young, one of the writers who worked on “Squid Game”.
