NC Law Enforcement Shuts Down Cockfighting Ring, Seizes Drugs, Guns
During a recent operation, police authorities seized nearly 200 roosters and arrested more than a dozen people suspected of being involved in a cockfighting ring

Cockfighting is not only illegal across the US, but it is also subject to prosecution. Besides being recognized as a criminal activity, cockfighting is an inhumane entertainment that some people may mistakenly call “sport.”
In a recent operation against a cockfighting ring in Granville County, North Carolina, law enforcement detained more than a dozen people, suspected of being involved in organizing and participating in the unlawful activity.
Prior to the raid, the Granville County Sheriff’s Office investigated several tips suggesting cockfights were organized in Granville County. Investigating the suspicious reports, law enforcement managed to infiltrate the operation with the help of an undercover deputy.
The police officer was able to obtain access to the property used for cockfights which was located off Lawrence Road. According to WRAL, the officer, just like other visitors, had to pay $50 to gain access.
The undercover cop was able to record a video of the cockfights which enabled law enforcement to secure a warrant. On Saturday afternoon, deputies executed the search warrant of the premises.
The unpleasant surprise resulted in the arrest of 15 people. Deputies uncovered an arena that was set up for cockfights, as well as a large number of birds, some dead, while others, alive.
Although some suspects were apprehended on site, others ran into the nearby woods. Attempting to flee, some of the visitors left their cars and other personal belongings. Overall, 50 vehicles were found on-site at the property.
Additionally, law enforcement found nearly 200 roosters. Some of the birds had gaffs attached to their feet, a razor-sharp blade that is used in cockfights.
Besides the live bids, police uncovered dead chickens, drugs, alcohol and even guns. An investigation into the cockfighting ring continues. More suspects are likely to be detained as well.
Investigation into the Unlawful Activity Continues
Sheriff Robert Fountain, who was interviewed by WRAL, revealed that a confidential tip helped bring down the cockfighting ring. The sheriff spoke about the criminal activity, revealing that never before police has seen “anything of this magnitude.”
Moreover, Fountain added: “To see razor blades taped to the birds’ legs and having them fight each other, it was really inhumane.” He confirmed that investigative actions continue as law enforcement is looking for additional information.
It is yet to be confirmed what charges each of the detainees may be facing. Per North Carolina’s laws, cockfighting is a Class I felony punishable by up to one year in prison.
