Las Vegas Housekeeper Implicated in Theft of over $100K
The alleged perpetrator reportedly used her position to sneak into guests’ rooms while they were away and steal money and other valuable items

A housekeeper at a prominent Las Vegas Strip resort has been implicated in a series of thefts involving large sums of money and personal items from hotel rooms, according to police documents obtained by local news outlet 8 News Now. Maria Menendez Betancourt of the Palazzo Tower at the Venetian Resort Las Vegas is facing multiple charges of theft and burglary.
The Suspect’s Unusual Behavior Drew Attention
The investigation into Betancourt picked up in early June when a guest reported a burglary in her room, where more than $8,000 was missing. Resort investigators promptly pinpointed Betancourt as a suspect after a review of the lock on the guest’s room showed that she had entered the room while the guest was away.
Later in June, hotel security detained Betancourt on suspicion of having removed more than $110,000 from another guest. Despite not being on shift, surveillance video captured her entering the property. She activated a key fob to access guest suites and entered multiple rooms on different floors without carrying cleaning supplies.
On 18 June, when police took her into custody, she was wearing a gold bracelet reported stolen in another incident. Cops rearrested her on 12 July under new charges. According to the latest reports, Betancourt has three active Las Vegas Justice Court cases. She posted a bond, and a judge has ordered her to stay away from the Strip.
Modern Security Measures Proved Adequate
This case has garnered rising attention online as many wonder how the alleged perpetrator expected to get away with her crime with the prevalence of security cameras and digital key access logs. Surveillance footage revealed Betancourt using white bath towels to conceal the stolen items before leaving the room and the property.
The Venetian Resort has yet to comment on this matter. Security and law enforcement appear to have performed adequately, apprehending the suspect as soon as they gathered sufficient evidence for the arrest. However, the case also showcases a lack of early detection and prevention, which could damage the Venetian Resort’s public image and undermine customer trust.
The alleged theft has highlighted significant areas of improvement for the Venetian Resort Las Vegas. Hopefully, the venue will tighten its security policies and cooperate with authorities to ensure the safety and trust of its guests. While crime reports in Vegas will likely continue to make headlines in the foreseeable future, it is up to all stakeholders to learn and adapt.
