Young Australian Man Appears in Court Over AU$2M Online Gambling Scam

The suspect has been denied bail as he has supposedly defrauded at least 14 victims with police on the lookout for more

A 23-year-old man from Sydney appeared in Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday, facing multiple charges related to an alleged AU$2-million online gambling scam he is accused of operating.

According to investigators, the man set up the scheme and then handpicked gamblers who were willing to spend “considerable amounts.” The investigation into the alleged scam began in August 2023, after police were tipped off by various sources about the online gambling operation, which had accepted money from unsuspecting customers.

Police Suspect Man of Running Online Gambling Scheme

Authorities later received further information suggesting that the platform was, in fact, a scam. The accused, who voluntarily appeared in court on Tuesday, has been charged with 11 counts, including obtaining a financial advantage by deception, producing false documents, and others.

At this time, it is unclear if additional victims may be involved, as police continue to investigate. So far, 14 people have been identified as the victims of the man. The suspect remains in custody following his voluntary court appearance and will stay in detention until further notice.
