The total adjusted gross revenue reported by all licensed sportsbooks in September stood at $64.5 million
The Virginia Lottery, which regulates gaming in the Old Dominion, has published its sports betting financial report for September. The official data shows that the total money wagered increased drastically, demonstrating the local gaming industry’s strength.
Betting Handle Increased by 18.5% Year-on-Year
In its official report, the Virginia Lottery said that Virginians bet a total of $737.2 million on sports. This figure marks an increase of 18.5% from September 2024, the report noted. This figure is based on the results of Virginia’s fourteen licensed mobile operators and three casinos allowed to take wagers.
The report added that local players won back $667.4 million, which implies that operators kept 9.46% of all money wagered. As a result, the total adjusted gross revenue reported by all licensed sportsbooks in Virginia stood at $64.5 million.
The report shows that most players enjoyed betting online. According to the Virginia Lottery $731.5 million of the $737.2 million handle came from the mobile sector. Mobile gaming furthermore paid out $662.7 million in prizes and, after $5.2 million in deductions, was left with $63.6 million in adjusted gross revenue.
The casino retail sector, meanwhile, recorded $5.6 million in wagers and paid back $4.7 million to the players. After deductions of $43K, it was left with adjusted gross revenue of $891,650.
Wagering Operators Paid $9.7M in Taxes
Virginia sportsbooks are required to pay a 15% adjusted gross revenue tax. According to the Virginia Lottery’s report, licensed sports betting operators in the state paid a total of $9.7 million in taxes in September.
For context, Virginia deposits 97.5% of the betting tax into the state’s General Fund. In September, the fund received a total of $9.4 million.
The remaining 2.5% of the betting tax, meanwhile, is being deposited into the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund administered by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. As a result, Virginia’s problem gambling treatment sector received a $241,716 tax share in September.
