US Judge Allows Lawsuit Over Roblox Gambling to Continue
RBLXWild allowed Roblox players to connect their accounts and stake their Robux on chance-based games such as blackjack and coin flips
A federal judge in California has decided not to throw out claims against Boris Said Jr., who started the now-closed betting website RBLXWild. This decision paves the way for a combined lawsuit to go ahead. The lawsuit claims that kids were tempted to bet Robux, the fake money used on the Roblox platform.
Federal Judge Says RBLXWild Creator Must Face Claims Over Robux Betting
A California court this week threw out Said’s attempt to dismiss claims under the state’s Unfair Competition Law. The Northern District judge decided the plaintiffs had given enough specifics to show the website helped its creator profit from young users’ losses. Judge Vince Chhabria pointed out that the lawsuit painted a believable picture of RBLXWild as a front company Said set up and ran himself. This meant he could not separate his personal responsibility from what the company did.
RBLXWild gave Roblox users a chance to play games like blackjack and coin flips. It let them link their accounts and bet their Robux on games of chance. The platform took part in Roblox’s developer exchange program. This allowed it to turn the digital tokens it got from players into real cash. The court record shows that the site made a lot of money each day before it closed down after the first lawsuit.
Chhabria’s ruling stressed that Robux are considered items of value under California’s gambling laws. He noted that users have to buy Robux with real money and that the currency works like arcade tokens, making it something people can lose or others can take advantage of. The judge recognized that state gambling laws are complex and out-of-date, using unclear language about what counts as a “thing of value.” However, he decided that no reasonable reading would leave out Robux.
Ruling Leaves Said Directly Exposed to Claims Tied to Roblox Gambling Site
The court’s decision builds on previous rulings from the same judge. In 2024, Judge Chhabria decided Roblox could be seen as negligent for letting kids access outside gambling sites that took Robux. A Sky News report that year put RBLXWild in the spotlight as one of three big virtual casinos, leading to closer inspections from UK regulators, too.
Now that the motion to dismiss has failed, the case will go forward with claims that Said ran an unlawful and unfair business, acted negligently, and got rich in the process. The court also pointed out that since the claims might show violations of state gambling laws, federal laws about illegal gambling businesses could come into play as well.
This lawsuit represents another move in a wider legal struggle concerning kid-oriented online environments and how digital money muddies the boundary between gaming and betting.
