Terry Rozier Still Under Investigation in Betting Probe

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is still under federal investigation regarding alleged connections to an illegal betting ring

It’s been half a year since federal investigators began looking into Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier for allegedly manipulating games to benefit an illegal sports betting ring. The case is still very much active.

“Rozier Has Not Been Cleared of Any Wrongdoing”

Earlier this week, senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes went on X to provide a much-anticipated update on the situation. The “Fresno-raised” reporter who previously covered the Golden State Warriors with ESPN reported that Rozier was still under investigation and has not been cleared of wrongdoing.

“Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier has not been cleared of any wrongdoing and remains under federal investigation on a potential gambling probe, league sources tell me.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the case back in January, revealing that federal authorities were examining Rozier’s ties to an underground betting operation linked to Jontay Porter

Porter was banned for life from the NBA in April 2024 after deliberately exiting games early to avoid hitting prop bet numbers, moves that lined up with bets placed by the illegal ring.

Suspicious Patterns

Much of the scrutiny around “Scary Terry” Rozier centers on a March 2023 matchup between the New Orleans Pelicans and Rozier’s then-team, the Charlotte Hornets

The now 31-year-old left that game after just 10 minutes, citing foot soreness. The NBA later said its own review of that game found no rule violations by Rozier.

Still, federal investigators noted that the betting ring had wagered heavily on his prop unders that night, suggesting they had inside information about his early exit.

Fans have been quick to notice his up-and-down play since joining Miami, with some on social media even mocking his mistake-filled performance in a March game against Cleveland.

No Comment So Far

Rozier, a decade-long NBA vet who has made over $100 million during his NBA career, averaging 21.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in his best season (2022–23) with the Hornets, has yet to speak publicly about the investigation.

As expected, many have questioned why a high-earning player would jeopardize his career and reputation, provided the allegations prove to be true.

The former Boston Celtics is joined by Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley who is also reportedly being investigated by federal authorities over suspicious betting activity during the 2023–2024 season when he was still with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Since the probe became public last month, reports have also surfaced suggesting Rozier has been dealing with financial difficulties.

For now, the investigation continues, and the league, as well as the public, are watching closely.
